I just yesterday tried to simulate a first game in UQM. It was hard, and I ultimately failed. (I used my knowledge to go to Alpha Cerenkov and find ZEX )
What I tried to do was make it seem real. I was only acting on: 1. Knowledge of the races, their positions in SC1, etc. 2. Information I was told
Because I am lazy, I also used EP's mod to start the game with 1,000,000 RU. (Big mistake)
Here's the result (CONTAINS SPOILERS):
I had nothing to do in the beginning, so I decided, "Hey the Ilwrath sphere is farther down than usual, I should investigate that area". (Of course, excuse to find Pkunk.) Then I played legitimately, until I decided, "I should see in any Shofixti are left". Then I decided, "I'm just going to randomly go to Delta Centaury" (There's a lot of bio data), and then I finally stopped after "I should randomly go to Alpha Cerenkov and talk to the VUX", I finally stopped. I just really wish i could play the game fresh again. That could be quickly accomplished just by mixing things up a bit, moving stuff around, changing quests slightly, etc. Not extreme changes, just enough so that knowledge of the normal game doesn't help too much. (Except alien behavior...) On that topic, how hard would it be to sort of shuffle the stars? (Same exact positions/names, but for example Alpha Centauri could end up becoming what is now Betelgeuse, or maybe it could end up as what is now Zeta Persei) I am also referring to behavior of the stars as well as what minerals are there.
(i.e. if Alpha Centauri becomes what is now Zeta Persei, the Druuge will become your neighbor)

We did. You did. Yes we can. No.

Checking out the allies, I figured, would be one of the main things to do. In my fanfic, I considered what someone who was paying *very* close attention and had access to the map that came with the game, but did not have spoileriffic information, would do. Before the first chapter, Zelnick had already visited most alliance species - Shofixti, Chenjesu/Mmrnmhrm, and Arilou; and had heard about the Pkunk from the starting Ilwrath captain, and visited them; and of course with Fwiffo on board, he had contacted the Spathi.
Being cautious and initially weak, he hadn't sought the Yehat, nor even made contact with any of the battle thralls except the Mycon and the Ilwrath; furthermore, he had incorrectly figured that the Syreen were more closely guarded, being on the doorstep of the Ur-Quan and more liable to be inspected.

Interestingly enough, the first time I played, the very first species I met (besides Ilwrath) was the Pkunk. I found them while mining for minerals.

My first outing had me pursuing the Spathi first, since they are one of the 2 spheres visible by doing everything you can in Sol. From there, I sort of blundered into the Orz while mining, followed up on Hayes' message about Rigel to find the ZFP, and randomly found the Pkunk by flying into the corner for no real apparent reason. From there, I tended to rely on a combination of tips and info from the Melnorme to keep moving forward... until a friend started spoiling things with a walkthrough he found. Bleh.

I feel bad that I finished this game. Like... yeah, I wish I could play it again with the same sense of "Dude, this is freakin' awesome!" Alas, I'm stuck with the occasional Super Melee.
