Are there time-triggers for certain events?

I'm trying to get the Syreen to accept my Egg Shall fragments pretty early on in the game. I have 3 fragments however I don't get the option to tell the Syreen about them. I'm wondering if I simply need to wait and do other tasks before I can do this one or if I'm missing another trigger event.

There are triggers, but they are not time based. You (that is, the Captain) needs to know what these egg shells are exactly. There are several places where you can get that information.

Well I have the shells and I've had them analyzed... maybe I need to buy the info from Greenish.
