Found another melee quirk
« on: December 20, 2008, 10:08:17 pm »

It turns out that when an Utwig is touching a Chmmr satellite with its shield on, the satellites themselves are boosting the Utwig's battery by 10 energy per frame. Satellites are not supposed inflict damage to ships this way but the shield doesn't seem to realize this. Is this a bug or not? If this quirk is changed it may have a noticeable effect on the match-up.

Utwig would certainly still do well against the Chmmr; but perhaps it would not be so trivially easy to keep topped up. This is very interesting.

The Utwig shield code frightens me so I'm not about to try and implement a fix. If someone else has the time and inclination, post it in here and I'll see how different melee becomes.

UPDATE: I fixed it with some guidance from EP. Will report how this affects game balance eventually.

I tried it out with Gekko and it turns out that beating Chmmr with Utwig is still fairly simple. If you ask me, a fix to Utwig shield behavior ought to be applied to the next official release of UQM.
