I read someone saying they meant to play SC2 through as a galactic slave driver, but besides that, I didn't see any other ideas for playing through the game in "hard" mode. Here's a few ideas I was tossing around to make my next play harder. Opinions/suggestions/input would be appreciated:
---The Melnorme are lying bastards! Kill them all! KOS!
---No cargo bays allowed. The starbase lost the blueprints on them, and your starting cargo bay was permanently broken due to an accident by one of your crew members. The moment you can switch them out, you must! (This makes mineral farming impossible)
---Due to a lack of support and belief from starbase, as well as other aliens, they believe your mission is doomed to failure. As a result, none of them will fight in combat with you. You can still bring them along as diplomats to watch, but they may not enter combat. Only the Vindicator can fight.

I was doing that. I utterly failed because the Thraddash and Ilwrath wiped each other out. Details here:
When the Kohr-Ah went on their death march, I expected them to attack the Supox and Utwig after the Arilou. Then it turned out that the nearest race left was was the Pkunk. By the time the Kohr-Ah wiped out the Utwig, allowing me to grab the bomb, there was only one race left, the Supox. Therefore, although I made it to Procyon to get the flagship upgraded, at that time, the Kohr-Ah were close to Earth. I tried to escape from the Kohr-Ah's sphere of influence, but I couldn't go fast enough. They reached Earth before I could escape from their sphere. It seems that, if the Ilwrath and Thraddash are wiped out, this challenge is impossible. Also, you can find more challenges here.

This is part of the "Evil" challenge.

VERY similar to the Bounty Hunter challenge, though a little different fundamentally.

This would be a good challenge at first, but once you get the weapons from the Melnorme, it's easy.
Here's my idea (sort of an inverse of that last one):
-- You cannot use weapons on your flagship. Not even point-defense. You can only do battle with escort ships.
And here's another:
-- You cannot reconfigure your flagship. Absolutely no changes are allowed. You can however add ships and refuel/recrew.
And another:
-- You cannot re-crew your ships. You can build ships, but they will not be up to compliment (like Fwiffo's Star Runner), having absolutely no crew except the captain.

I actually meant to have all of those challenges in the same game. Thanks for the link though. Some of those I can't imagine being possible. "Don't ever visit Star base?!"

In a nutshell, without upgrades, you're looking (at best) a few dynamos, and likely 2 Ion Bolt Guns for straight and spread style. The 2 fights I see becoming a massive hassle is the Druudge ships around the bomb (Massive range, and you're a huge target) and of course the last one, both ships and Precursor when you only have 6 module slots available.
Yeah, I agree. The best way to counter the first is to pack the flagship with crew, but against the Sa-Matra, it's a different story. I'd actually be willing to bet that it's impossible. (Actually, I'll try it right now.) EDIT:
I have decided conclusively that it IS possible. I myself did not succeed. But I made these observations: 1. With plenty of patience, it is possible to beat the Dreadnoughts and Marauders, possibly without taking a single point of damage. 2. You can use the green shots from the Sa-Matra to fling the flagship into huge speeds. If you do this, none of the shots can catch up to you, and assuming you don't just run into a shot, stopping you, you can keep this speed and shoot at the generators with your gun. I myself failed because I ran into a green shot, stopping the flagship, allowing a flame to catch up and obliterate my flagship.

Ugh. Apparently I used to make these threads when I was 15 too. I guess all teenagers think alike. The problem, as I see it now, is that self-inflicted handicaps do little to change the game. Star Control 2's difficulty doesn't come from combat, it comes from puzzling out what the heck you're supposed to do. Once you've beaten the game, the real challenge is gone. You don't get different dialogue for using ZFP Stingers as your war fleet or anything of that nature. There isn't really enough reason to play the game with a handicap unless you're an overly obsessed fan.
...Oh.
