Yes friends, that 's' in the thread title is no typo! There will be two tournaments this month. Two, I say! The former is intended for newbies, the latter for veterans. I know you long-time players have an insatiable hunger for totally bizarre rulesets, so here you go!
PILLOW FIGHT
[Date]
Sunday, February 15th, 2009
[Time]
* 5 AM Sydney * 7 AM Wellington * 12 PM Los Angeles * 1 PM Denver * 2 PM Chicago * 3 PM New York * 8 PM London * 9 PM Paris * 10 PM Helsinki
[Place]
#UQM-Arena on irc://chat.freenode.net. If you don't know how any of this stuff works, this thing that Gekko wrote may be of use to you.
[Tournament Rules]
1) Expert players are barred from participating in this tournament. 2) There is a maximum fleet size of 200 points for all players. 3) Do not use more than one of any ship type. 4) The "stalemate breaker" rule is in effect. There has been confusion regarding this numerous times, so here is the rule in its verbose entirety:
Stalemates
Rule: In the spirit of competition, both players should employ whatever tactics they consider most effective. This may result in a stalemate at some point. If so, the faster of the two ships becomes a designated attacker. The attacker does not necessarily have to make a bee-line directly for the defender, but they are required to take the initiative.
Explanation: Stalemates are bound to happen. We found this rule to be a relatively painless solution. The decision to use speed as a stalemate-breaker did not significantly reduce the effectiveness of Star Control's fastest ships. As it turned out, the most mobile combatants were best suited to withstand such a penalty.
[Tournament Structure]
Players will be paired against each other at random. The tournament will consist of three rounds using Swiss tournament rules, meaning that you will play against other defeated players if you lose a match. There will be an additional final round between undefeated contestants if a clear winner has not emerged.
If the player turn-out is low, everyone will play against everyone once.
RANDOM SHIP SELECTION INSANITY
[Date]
Saturday, February 21st, 2009
[Time]
* 5 AM Sydney * 7 AM Wellington * 12 PM Los Angeles * 1 PM Denver * 2 PM Chicago * 3 PM New York * 8 PM London * 9 PM Paris * 10 PM Helsinki
[Place]
#UQM-Arena on irc://chat.freenode.net.
[Tournament Rules]
1) Ships must be selected at random during combat. To enforce this, players will be required to choose their next ship instantly whenever the ship selection screen is presented to them. Write the words "PICK NEXT SHIP NOW" on a post-it and attach it to your monitor if you have to. I will be handing out draconian penalties every time someone breaks this rule. 2) There is a maximum fleet size of 200 points for all players. 3) Do not use more than one of any ship type. 4) The Chmmr Avatar, Kohr-Ah Marauder and Thraddash Torch are banned from play. 5) The "stalemate breaker" rule is in effect.
[Tournament Structure]
Another three round Swiss tournament. We'll play Round Robin if the turn-out is weak.

What about veterans who like to beat up on newbies? You need a tournament for us.

That's pretty much what the standard ruleset is for.

Ahh, I can't make this one. Interestingly, I will be up at the casinos that day, so the element of chance remains the theme of the day.

Can you participate in both? Yes.
I find the title "Pillow Fight" to be demeaning. No experts eh? Since there's usually only about 10 total people that play tournaments at a time, won't this be a pretty short one? I can switch from 3-Round Swiss to Round Robin if that ends up being a problem.

I'm thinking of attending both... and I HOPE that this time I won't have any nasty real-life surprises

I'd like to participate in the newbie tournament for sure.
While not a 'newb' to Star Control, I haven't played in years and I'm sure other people have amazing online skills compared to mine.

Why don't all races have point defense lasers?
|
im not a newb since i've been playing since 1992. But I'm not as good as shiver or elf... so does that mean I can play or am I too good?

I tested something with SuddenDeath on net melee. We build our fleets and then picked our ships in the order they were on the ship list, from left to right. It was quite interesting, and I think it deserves to be a ruleset of some sort.

Like most Pillow Fights, the turn-out was garbage. It really doesn't make much sense considering that there have been more new players in #UQM-Arena over the past few weeks than any similar length of time throughout all of 2008! I guess the less hardcore players are just stupid like that. Congrats to Sudden Death on winning what might be the very last Pillow Fight ever hosted. I'm looking forward to playing random selection with you guys this coming weekend.

Crappy turnout could be because you set it for Valentines weekend. 9 / 10 girlfriends say they will dump your ass if you ignore them and play in a tournament all afternoon at this time.
