Net Melee Tournament for March 2009
« on: March 20, 2009, 01:02:02 am »

Tournament time again. No mods or gimmicks this time around people, just the usual standby. If you have any questions or comments, post them here I guess.

[Date]

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

[Time]

Here is how I found the various local times in case anyone's wondering.

    *  6 AM Sydney
    *  8 AM Auckland
    * 12 PM Los Angeles
    *  1 PM Denver
    *  2 PM Chicago
    *  3 PM New York
    *  7 PM London
    *  8 PM Paris
    *  9 PM Helsinki

[Place]

#UQM-Arena on irc://chat.freenode.net. If you don't know how any of this stuff works, this thing that Gekko wrote may be of use to you.

[Tournament Rules]

1) There is a maximum fleet size of 200 points for all players.
2) Do not use more than one of any ship type.
3) The Thraddash Torch is banned from play.
4) The "stalemate breaker" rule is in effect. There has been confusion regarding this numerous times, so here is the rule in its verbose entirety:

Stalemates

Rule: In the spirit of competition, both players should employ whatever tactics they consider most effective. This may result in a stalemate at some point. If so, the faster of the two ships becomes a designated attacker. The attacker does not necessarily have to make a bee-line directly for the defender, but they are required to take the initiative.

Explanation: Stalemates are bound to happen. We found this rule to be a relatively painless solution. The decision to use speed as a stalemate-breaker did not significantly reduce the effectiveness of Star Control's fastest ships. As it turned out, the most mobile combatants were best suited to withstand such a penalty.

[Tournament Structure]

Players will be paired against each other at random. The tournament will consist of three rounds using Swiss tournament rules, meaning that you will play against other defeated players if you lose a match. There will be an additional final round between undefeated contestants if a clear winner has not emerged.

If the player turn-out is low, everyone will play against everyone else once.

This tournament shall mark my comeback as a semi-fearsome starship captain.

In that case:

This tournament shall mark my comeback as a fearsome starship captain.

Then this tournament shall mark my entrance as a totally unfearsome starship captain.

Edit: Just to clarify, this is without the new melee balance right?

I may actually be able to make it to this one. In that case, this tournament shall mark my entrance as a complete n00b... or will it? We shall see...

Yes. Next month I'm thinking of hosting a standard ruleset mod tournament followed by a duplicate ships mod tournament. If you want to try it out sooner than that, #uqm-arena usually has someone logged in that isn't AFK. Tracking down a player at your own skill level when you're new can be a bit tricky, though.

Turn-out was kind of weak and half of the would-be participants showed up late, so I canceled. It would have been Round Robin if you guys had bothered to show up on time. Why do I go through all this trouble? I'm done hosting these. If anyone's looking for a game of net melee, the best time to find someone is after sundown in Europe or between noon and early evening in the US on a Saturday.

Shiver, did you remember to account for the fact that Daylight Savings time changed here in the US just recently? Just putting that out there; I don't know if that was anyone's excuse or not, but (even though I don't participate) I'd hate to see the periodic tournaments just disappear.
