There is a Japanese pictograph that is used today: orz

orz is a pictograph depicting someone bowing down. The "o" is the head, the "r" is the arms and body, and the "z" is the legs.

Is there possibly a connection between this pictograph and the Orz in Star Control II, or is it just a coincidence?

If it's a coincidence, it's one heck of a coincidence! Grin

No, it's not even a coincidence. If you throw random characters together, you can make pictographs. Given the number of these things, it's hardly even improbable.

It would be a coincidence of the highest order if the Orz had ANYTHING to do with bowing. Either that, or the creators noticed this resemblance at the time they made SC2.

I found this out a few months ago when looking up "Orz" on youtube. Going by the videos, it's a thoroughly scary phenomenon - all the comments are just 'orz'.

Obviously it's the Orz trying to communicate with us.
