Newbie question: Star Com told me to do something, but I didn't write it down
« on: May 12, 2009, 07:02:44 pm »

So, just starting up SC2, for the first time ever, and I'm still sort of getting back in the older games did things.

The Starbase Commander told me about a set of broadcasts they were receiving from somewhere that I forgot to write down.  At this point in the game I have aquired the manic clam, defeated the evil spider with flamers, met the Melnorme (but did have anything to trade them), and had a couple very sucessful mineral runs.  That, and the probes.  So, how do I find out where it was he was pointing me to?  Was this a semi-random even, or did I just miss a plot point?

The Commander makes a number of announcements throughout the game, most of which are fairly important. I don't think the game has any sort of log feature that maintains a list of past conversations. So you're pretty much on your own to keep track of these things.

Now given the stage of the game you're at, based on your description, I don't think this particular piece of information Hayes is giving you is critical. No, this probably falls into the "nice to know", but not terribly important category. So you can probably get away with this one without crippling your game.

Next time, however, write it down! Or you may not be so lucky!  Wink

Check Rigel. Fly around the system until you find a ship to communicate with.

I did actually find it.  It was Rigil, which lead to the Zoq-Fot-Pik, which leads to the question, how does one fight Marauders and Dreadnaughts with an Earthling Cruiser, Eluder, and a Stinger?  I don't seem to have the tactics down for that one.

Use the Spathi Eluder . Against the Kohr-Ah  and the Ur-Quan piloted by the AI it's the best ship . Better though is to avoid them altogether .

Avoidance is definitely key until you're confident in your combat prowess. Either invest in lots of thrusters and turning jets with your mineral wealth, or get some practice in using Super Melee until you think you can fight them off.

Do yourself a favor. (this is assuming you have a decent amount of turning jets and antimatter thrusters)  When you leave the Zoq-Fot-Pik star system, go exactly north-west (if you take up as north), and before the ships from north can get to you, continue the turn and go directly south and fly on 'til you're out.  Worked for me every time.

EDIT:  yup, spoilers.  Sorry man >_>  AND DON'T GO LOOK UP SOME FRICKIN WALKTHROUGH TO FIGURE OUT WHAT I JUST SAID!

The best ship obtainable early in the game, perhaps, but the Avatar and the Jugger are much better. They also have the advantage of preventing the Dreadnought from launching fighters.

The Avatar is not cost-effective against Kohr-Ah. If the ship isn't destroyed, it will be severely damaged. Spathi is definitely better.

No. the Jugger is better. It's difficult, but possible to destroy either a Dreadnought or a Marauder without taking any damage.

And the Avatar is still pretty good. It can destroy a Dreadnought pretty quickly, though not without taking damage itself (and possible losing one or more ZapSats)

It is very easy to defeat a thousand Dreadnoughts/Marauders with a single Spathi Eluder. The only reason I don't do that is because it's so boring. The stupid cyborg kind of makes it too easy for Spathi. Utwig on the other hand is risky. One false move can send you crashing into the planet, resulting in the loss of precious crew.

Also, I wasn't denying that Chmmr will win against Ur-Quan or Kohr-Ah, it's just inefficient. You almost always walk out sustaining heavy damage.

The Utwig is hard to handle effectively. I think it usually does a better job when controlled by the computer.

And using Spathi would be annoyingly slow.

The cyborg does not handle any ships effectively. For example, if it controls the Utwig, doesn't shield against the Kohr-Ah FRIED.

The computer is better with timing, though. If the computer is controlling it, it will shield at just the right moment (usually) to avoid taking damage. You're probably right about it not shielding against the F.R.I.E.D. – I haven't noticed that – but it generally does a better job avoiding damage from the primary weaponry.

Usually that doesn't matter. The stupidity of the AI easily blocks out any better timing it has. And besides that, the AI is very predictable and overall very stupid.
