Resources for clones.
« on: June 01, 2009, 06:02:49 pm »

I remember when I was working on my clone for sc2 what ended up killing the project (other then my life getting hectic) was that I could not find good resources for graphics both 3d models and high resolution ship images, were hard to find.
What I propose for those fledgling clone makers is a comprehensive resource for all the existing image models and sounds other then what exists in UQM.

Does such a resource exist?

There are very basic pages on this in the Ultronomicon: 3D models and music. Feel free to expand those pages (and create new ones). There also used to be a lot on the PNF, but most of the links there seem to be broken now.

I was wondering about this too.  I had assumed the ultronomicon was it and was/am going to try and slip my stuff into it at some time.

Right now pretty much every link on PNF is borken. A very large amount of content was removed due to broken links when we started working on the improved version a month or so back. With it's DNS change PNF has now taken the first major step towards a complete restructure and whatever content got buried when the old page broke will hopefully be available in three or four weeks. I'm sure it'd be possible to host models on PNF, but since anyone can edit the Ultronomicon that might make for a much more dynamic list.

There are also quite a few pictures of models on *juicy* as well, as I recall.

Aww, no dreadnought? Sad

I was going to load a Dreadnought 3D model into Star Wraith III or Star Wraith IV, but I guess I'm stuck with the Marauder, Fury, and Cruiser. Cry

Damn! Star Wraith won't orient the models right! I guess I just can't use them...

As a heads up, there are some models over on SC3D as well.

One of the aims of my clone game was to make my models open source to all.  I haven't put that together yet, but I will eventually, and then I'll post it here for anyone that wants them...

Unfortunately

my models < Dragons models

by a lot.

Once your project is released that is very likely.

Well, when you put it that nicely I'm filled with energy and passion to go out and headhunt models for you. Have you checked the Sins guys out? Most of their models aren't really canon, but they have plenty of them.

Might want to hunt for people instead to get the licenses sorted out, perhaps?

I think more than a little bit of the challenge comes from the fact that Star Control's game play, despite being at it's root as old as video games, is a difficult one to reproduce. Oh, rotating ships, collision, and shooing, that's fine. But unique weapons loads, variable turning ratios and thrusting? The math on those last two can discourage all but the most dedicated of game makers. It's no side-scrolling-platform jumper to be sure (the math for which is much easier.)

If you want, I can upload the SC1 & SC2 sprites that timewarp used, because I recently extracted them Smiley

The sprites aren't 3D models, but they would be interesting. We're working on the PNF site right now, and I'd be happy to put them on a page alongside some information on the project.  Shoot me a PM here or on SCDB and let me know.
