Tips for Ilwrath
« on: July 09, 2009, 05:01:01 am »

I'm a brand new player and read it was good to practice against Ilwrath and Slylandro in Super Melee. I could use some tips for my Earth cruise vs the Ilwrath! I get my butt kicked on the lowest difficulty!

Hi dogeddie (and everyone else)

If you're talking about practise for the main game, then its definitely better to avoid fighting Ilwrath early on if you can avoid it.  All this means is that you don't travel in their sphere of influence. Ilwrath are basically designed to destroy Earthling Cruisers so I wouldnt even bother using those. Be patient - it wont be long before you can add more powerful escort ships to your party, or have the means to upgrade your flagship.

As for Slylandro, if you can get hold of a Spathi Eluder vessel, then they are reasonably easy to defeat. You just need to fly away from them and use your secondary weapon function the B.U.T.T. missiles).  But until you get a Spathi, you'll have to use Earthling vessels - which can be expensive. Unfortunately there's no easy was of avoiding Slylandro as they travel really fast in hyperspace.

Enjoy the game!

I do not recommend fighting the Ilwrath at all. It's also entirely unnecessary.

The Slylandro, on the other hand, are fairly easy to defeat with a ship that can fire backwards, ie a Spathi or possibly an Orz (not sure if they're fast enough though). You may need to turn around frequently though, because the Slylandro will often turn back suddenly.

Orz are not fast enough and their rapid shots don't confuse the Slylandro enough. It works out poorly.

The first Ilwrath ship in the game is damaged, and is a lot easier to defeat than other Avengers.

I agree, stay away from the Ilwrath. As for the probes, the best way I've found to fight them with a Earthling ship is to run away, turn toward them (while drifting away) and fire missiles. The probes usually turn away at this point. Run away again and turn and fire. Basically, always be moving away from the probe, but face them as much as possible.

Yeah, I thought speed might be an issue.

Thraddash are fairly good against them though, I would suspect.

One thing is, if your flagship is reasonably close to full thrust and turning, and has a gun of any sort, it is an Ilwrath-annihilating machine. You will just want to make sure that as you are drifting backwards, you are doing it along a cardinal direction to minimize your chances of a planetary collision.

Against AI, yeah Thraddash own. Same for Spathi. The AI will recklessly chase an enemy as it launches BUTTs or afterburner exhaust.

Thraddash wins against Utwig too, because the Utwig just doesn't shield against the afterburner most of the time. This also happens with Kohr-Ah FRIED.

That is one thing with the AI I really don't understand.

In PvP-- Thraddash and Utwig > all. There isn't really anything that either lose to with any degree of solidity. They just pwn everything. OFC- Utwig > all, Thraddash > everything but utwig. right...

How so? An Utwig human player should essentially never lose crew or batt in any fight- they are clearly the best in good hands.

Torch is too fast/manueverable and it's primary has excellent range. The booster has the added bonus of blocking most attacks and zips across the screen faster than most ships can turn. And that pea-shooter is just OP-- it has enough range/rof to take on a Terminator and is also one of the more solid 30 point killers. Those space rhinos are scrappy in the right hands.
