the 3D animation from the 3DO version
« on: September 14, 2009, 07:33:12 am »

OK, I was wondering if anyone was interested in a recreation of the 3DO animations for SC2. I am a 3D modeler trained on Maya, and was interested in maybe building 3D models of the ships and stuff to animate for the game. If someone has the animations from the 3DO game, however, it would save me hundreds of hours making my own.

I guess my question is, would it be worth it?

Amiga_Nut is working on a similar project, and has asked before for others to join in. You may want to contact him.

huh, so okay...

if I'm reading that right, it says you can only play the spinning ships videos, NOT the intro/ending, right?

So, is that torrent for the intro/ending too, or just the spins?

3DO SC2 comes with about 180 MB of videos: about 100 MB for the intro and ending, 50 MB of ship spin animations and 30 MB of advertising. The video format is not very good and can be squashed down about 20 % with standard compression tools, so a package of SC2 3DO videos (removing the 3DO commercial) should come to about 120 MB.

The ship spins don't work with the latest SVN build. Were they disabled on purpose? In fact, I get no slideshow intro either, ouch!

I'm pretty sure that Chad over at the Pages of Now and Forever has all of the animations.  We've just rebuilt the site, and we're working on getting them back up soon.

The content management system is being overhauled to allow easier modification. Files have to be placed a bit differently in the new system. In the SVN tree, you will find a directory called content/addons/3dovideo containing a resource description file that lists which file goes where. Basically, the intro files go in content/addons/3dovideo/intro, the ending in content/addons/3dovideo/ending and the spins in content/addons/3dovideo/spins. Just create these subdirectories of content/addons/3dovideo and move the videos and associated files there. I imagine you're supposed to create ZIP files containing all the add-on data, but this doesn't seem to be necessary.

See the description of content management in UQM 0.7 for further information.

Trying to get the remix.rmp files results in this error:
Direct links: 1, 2, 3

Apparently, someone on the UQM team relied on directory listings being enabled by default, and SourceForge changed the policy, breaking tons of cases where someone had linked to a directory.

Excellent, I think I have everything now.  Smiley

Another question if I may: A year ago I remember seeing some new static ship info screens in the game. They were in place for only a few ships, but they showed the ship and IIRC some info popped up on mouseover. Are those still around?

IIRC, they haven't actually been added to the game. Besides, UQM doesn't even support a mouse for anything useful.
