New commercial Archon remake/sequel thing
« on: October 14, 2009, 08:27:11 am »

Some of you may be interested to note a new Archon game for the PC is coming soon. Unfortunately, not by TFB, but it appears to be adding quite a bit of new stuff (4 players? Power-ups? Why, I never ...) as well new graphics (with a mode to switch to the original graphics).

An iPhone version has possibly already been released? I couldn't tell, but if anyone's played that, thoughts?

It seems to be a completely true to the original remake, with updated graphics. Apparently they also used the original source code.
I never played the original Archon though, even though I owned a C64. Was it some kind of chess game with different rules for when pieces meet?

Heh, looks like this is the offspring of Archon: Evolution, a project that literally dropped off the face of the Internet a few years ago (and which was quite buggy at the time)...

As for the original; it was partially inspired by that game Chewie and C3PO were playing aboard the Millenium Falcon in Star Wars IV: like chess, and when two pieces meet, they fight in an arena to decide who is the victor of a fight.

Basically, although beyond the arcade-like battle element there was also some interesting strategic rules -- the squares cycled between different patterns of light and dark (favouring the correspondingly coloured player in the battle arena), which was rather novel, plus the wizard unit had spells to cast on the main board like 'teleport' or 'summon elemental.'

If you like SC melee, you'll probably like Archon as well -- you can definitely see how the one informed the other.

I might just buy this when it's out. Always wanted to try Archon, but not enough to deal with an ancient interface.

Thanx fluffy. This is awesome news! I loved Archon and the sequel Archon Adpet back in the day. The original put PR III on the gaming map imo. Internet play will be a welcome addition as well. I'm curious how exactly 4 player will work though. Seems two or three players could team up against one.

Random history stuff: Archcon Classic began life as Archon Evolution, a comerical remake which was then released free but unfinished.  You can find version 0.7 here if you're interested.  I think that was one of the last free versions released.  All that works is the two player option but it still looks pretty similar.
