My attempt at "remixes"
« on: April 15, 2010, 02:25:21 pm »

I have just put up 2 remixes on my sourceforge page for the Vux and the Arilou.

It started as just wanting to get a better sound out of the .mod files using better quality samples
and it turned into converting them to midi by hand and re-recording them using soundfonts.
Ran them through Audition as well just to get a more clean cut sound out of 'em.

So these are at the heart of it the original .mod music with better quality sound and samples.

https://sourceforge.net/projects/uqm-mods/files/

Vux may be a bit brickwalled (A.K.A. Loud as @#$%) but I'll fix that later.

Don't really know if I'll continue to do the rest, some of them seem just a bit difficult when it comes to resampling simply because the unique samples used, I do have the Ilwrath comm music almost ready to go though.

Pretty good job. The choir sample on the Vux suffered a bit since you've converted what sounds like a major chord to a single note. Otherwise both tunes came out pretty nice for a instrument swap and remastering job.

AH, remaster was the word I was looking for Grin

Thanks for the input, I'm gonna take a closer "look" at the original sound and see if I can do a better match.

I threw up a Vux Mk. II up on sourceforge for you to check out.
De-brickwalled it and added chords instead of octaves.

OK, this link works.

De-brickwalled it and added chords instead of octaves.
... Which was pretty much exactly what was needed. It's groovy now. Cheesy

Ariloulaleelay

I really like the VUX one, though the "chorus" sounds a little strange when they abruptly cut off a long sustained note. Other than that, it's quite good.

The Ilwrath definitely sounds more like a genuine remix than a remaster. In particular, it seems to have completely lost the strange-sounding secondary part (which is an instrument I am hard pressed to describe the sound of; metally, perhaps?), which was basically the only interesting part of the song. It's a little too dull currently.

The Arilou one is a perfect remaster and I've got nothing bad to say about it.

Are you planning on giving this treatment to the rest of the songs? If so, any plans to set them up in a big music pack for use with UQM (I know you could just put them all in separately, but for convenience's sake)?

No, not really. If I can find a way to do some of the other songs faithfully then I might but a lot of those songs depend on instruments that just don't exist.
Maybe if I could find lossless samples in high quality I could implement them into my soundbank. Undecided
I was thinking of doing the Syreen next

Hey, wow! This is great!

The Ilwrath one has great sounds, especially the bass, which has that "in your face"-attitude in it. The song would benefit from a little variation here and there though, it is a bit monotonous right now as Draxas pointed out.

Again, the Vux piece has the best bassline I've heard of the Vux variants there are and the drums have just the right kind of energy in them. I do prefer the Precursor version's choir section though, perhaps because it sounds more "seamless".

The one I really loved was the Arilou remix/master. Especially because I haven't been able to find other Arilou remixes that would actually be based on the original and not completely different songs (referring to Precursors 'mix).

Once you're happy with these, let me know. I'd love to stick a few on the PNF

Wow, if you could give this same treatment to the Yehat theme, that would be REALLY awesome. That's one of my favorite themes from SC2, and I kinda really absolutely abhor the Precursors' version of it. IMO, it should be the main theme of SC2 in general (which may be why I'm kinda using it for the main theme of a SC2 animation I'm working on atm Tongue)

I could try but there are many samples I can't recreate through the use of soundfont.
I'm also not very savvy with audio editing to duplicate most.

If I do get an end result that I'm satisfied with I'll put it up.

UPDATE:

Here are the first 24 bars just using the soundfonts.
No real effects are used quite yet and the volumes of the instruments aren't optimized properly but this should give you and idea of the direction I'm taking.

UPDATE 2:

Take this for a test drive and tell me if there is anything I could do with it.
At this point I'm pretty much satisfied but I need another set of ears.

I took the liberty of adding a few things that kinda bugged me, most of you guys won't even notice though.

Oh yeah word of warning, the remaster I did is about half a semitone off from the original so it won't match up exactly when it comes to tuning.

I like most of it, but the dominant instrument from 2:04 to 2:17 really annoys my ears...
