Is it possible to not fix the Starbase
« on: May 24, 2010, 06:38:13 am »

Is it possible to beat the game without giving Hayes his radioactives at the start?

I tried once but I gave up after it took me three hours just to get the Taalo Shield.

Possible? Yes. Massochistic? Very much so. That would be like playing a Pokemon game where every time you have a pokemon faint, they have to be released IMMEDIATELY, where healing items are not allowed outside of combat, where legendaries are to be killed on sight, where you can only catch 1 pokemon per zone, and only if you had access to pokeballs at the time that you got there. Okay, sorry, that was a Valaggar-like rant, but whatever. I hope you got my point. It's not worth it, unless you REALLY want to play UQM hard mode.

There was a bug fix in UQM quite a while ago specifically to address this situation: the original SC2 (and early versions of UQM) will, if you haven't saved the starbase yet, crash near the end of the game when you are suddenly transported to the starbase. Someone actually managed to get this far without using the starbase.

The game actually increases the amount of Probes in HyperSpace drastically to force you to visit the starbase, so it's really hard.

Technically the probes don't make it hard, just really really really annoying.
If you can beat 10 probes without casualties, you can beat 300 probes without casualties.

While this is true, the Spathi Discriminator, I mean, Eluder piloted by Fwiffo is your best tool against those Probes (the AI is a little more than broken in this matchup Tongue), it still means that the game will be turned into an awesome space adventure that's masked by "Oh look, another 15 probes for me to kill, lets waste another 2 hours before I get to my destination." I mean, if that's what you want to do, go right ahead, we're not stopping you  Grin.

but without save scumming you are bound to eventually have a slip up or an accident...

besides, sometimes the game starts with the enemy right on top of you, there is nothing you could do to completely avoid at least some damage when that happens

How did those guys deal with all the probes? Just run away after each time?

You can't run away. You have to fight every single one. (Until you get the destruct code at least)
