working on a star control animation need feedback on my 3d models
« on: June 04, 2010, 10:22:58 am »

I am working on a star control animation which is set right after the end of star control 2.  The kohr-ah want revenge on earth and they are coming after the captian.  I just finished my earth ship today but i have already done around 2 minutes of animation with the kohrah ship in hyperspace blowing up earth probes.  I would like some feedback on my 3d models does anyone think they are good bad ect. could they be improved and how. and the ship on the top is an orz ship.

I like it! Looks like you've given yourself quite a bit of creative freedom with these ships though Wink

I like it! Except for the Earthling cruiser... I dunno why, I guess there are too many lights and nacelles are too forward for how I imagine it? But what do I know, awesome work either way.

Your take on the ships is interesting, and they wind up looking pretty neat. Also, I think it's odd that of the 3 ships in that picture, the only one not studded with little spikey bits somewhere is the Kohr-Ah, which seems to be the most streamlined of the designs. They all look good, but you've definitely made some interesting design choices.

I like the Kohr-Ah ship, as though it is quite different from Marauder, it definitely in the style. Maybe a scout/hunter, as the tentacly protrusions in the middle look like sensory device.
The cruiser I didn't like. It has LEGO appearance because of the lights, and the size, form and position of nacelles make it look too much like the Vindicator.

I was trying to imagine how point defense worked and lots of little sticking out lazer banks that could fire in any direction was what i imagined it is a bit much though, maybe less of them, maybe not on the head of the earthling ship.

I'll throw in my vote with "cruiser too spiky". I like the Kohr-ah, it's very fluid and the glowing runes are a nice touch. It's not quite as imposing as I'd have expected though.

If you're looking for further inspiration, there are quite a few 3D models over at the Pages of Now and Forever that you might find interesting. In the "Mods, Clones & Fan content" section of their forum there are also a few threads for a modded game that contains plenty of Kohr-Ah ships. You might also get some additional feedback over there if you need more.

And the PNF would be happy to host  your animation of course, just  let me know.

I for one really like the Cruiser, actually.  Though I think the Kohr-Ah is a little too streamlined - game/manual graphics give the impression of a bulky behemoth, full of harsh rougness and craggy extrusions and all that.

Not sure what to think about the Orz, maybe it's the angle...  All in all the rendering looks impressive, though.  Nice work!

Those are fantastic. They lose the cartoonish element. They are how I would imagine they'd be in a live action film adaption

Great overall style, the Cruiser just doesn't look... right, somehow. I think maybe the outriggers are a little too long.

Glad to see multiple ship designs though, it's unrealistic to assume each race only has one ship design, and there is no need to keep a animation simple for gameplay reasons.  Wink

I just have to mention about the Cruiser, it just wouldn't be practical for any race to have a bunch of weapons mounted in different places for better coverage. This is why rotating cannons and guns on boats have in the past been preferred to having several cannons on the ship. I think the Cruiser design would be quite similar; a rotating laser located in the center of the Cruiser.

I do like the models. They look incredibly realistic. Looking forward to this animation! Smiley
