I enjoy overthinking things.

I am already a plenty opinionated person myself, but I just wanted to know my fellow community members' thoughts and impressions of the different races and share my own ideas. So, the topic of this is what your favorite alien species is, your reasoning on why it is your favorite, and perhaps your grievances against certain other races. Do not discuss their ships exclusively; commentary on their spaceships is welcome as long as your focus is the personality of the species. For example, I like the Utwig Jugger's blasting power, but the Utwig themselves really tic me off. In fact, I would kill an Utwig on sight if they were not so vital to winning the game (call me what you like, but it's true). If you dislike or even hate a certain race for whatever reason, share that too, but don't spare any of the details of what you think makes that race so irritating to you.
Since I started the topic, I have the honor of starting first. Lucky me!
My favorite Star Control race is the Thraddash. Like myself, they love a good battle and like to blow stuff up. Their philosophy is to fight, learn, and improve. They are not evil, but they sincerely enjoy waging war. Quite a few times, when I came to visit them and their resource-rich planets, they tell me that my presence in their territory is an act of war, which they are thrilled to know. By engaging them in battle, I both gradually start to impress them and profit from the RU I salvage from their ships -- what a deal! The Thraddash voice acting puts some other races to shame. Plus, the Torch can use its secondary propulsion system (Reeunk afterburner) as a weapon to great effect. Even if you do not like the ship, you have to admit that's pretty neat. I am irritated by the Melnorme at times. I like what they have to sell, don't get me wrong, but I just wish they did not speak sooo darrn slowwly. Even when you threaten to kill the Melnorme they do not break from their monotonous tone of voice. That is weird, even for intergalactic business-minded traders. I wonder why they don't give an option for their customers to pay them to get them to hurry up. It should be profitable enough for them to consider.

My favorite are the Spathi and Orz because they are funny.

My favorite race are the Spathi for several reasons: First and foremost it's their technical skill - they are said to go from bronze age to space flight in a century. Same is backed by their ability to copy Kzer-Za shield technology from a distance and without anyone noticing. In addition they have both sarcasm and a sense of humor. Their worldly views are realistic. All these traits I value. I am far from being a coward, but I do usually go cautiously.
I dislike the Druuge (probably as it was intended). I typically dislike people that are only interested in money. Furthermore, their artifact scheming is beyond falsification, and I don't like liars.

My favorite would have to be the Yehat, their backstory (arguably) is the most engrossing in the game. I don't really hate any one race, but the Supox are the ones I like the least, they seem to have very little purpose other than to play second fiddle to the Utwig.

Perhaps a more appropriate term would be second banana? sorry about that
Ok, better get on-topic. *frantically checks the last time this question came up*
Apparently my favourite race is the Ilwrath, on account of the voice. I can see that.
Least favourite...Supox is too obvious, so I'll go with the Chmmr. Why the Chmmr? Because despite the epic voice, the epic ships and the pretty cool lines, they're just far too cold and distant. They're clearly the Plot Device Fairies of the game, and that's just as bad as being the Here Take This Fairies.

Try using a 'Caster when in orbit around the planet. Despite the slave shield, they'll be able to speak with you... And say the same things they do once you break them out, just not in all caps.

But they'd already been partially hybridized by that point.

No, they make it pretty clear that it's the Chenjesu speaking, both in the flavor text and actual dialog (super-sensitive innate Hyperwave is mentioned several times with regard to the Chenjesu).

Favorite: Yehat. Just their backstory and their inner struggle. It makes me feel for them somehow.
Other favorites: Androsynth: Backstory makes you feel sorry for them, and I also respect their incredible technology.
Ur-Quan Kzer-Za: I don't know how many other people here watch Avatar (the series, not the movie), but the Ur-Quan really remind me of Zuko. They seem like they are confused and unsure about what is right. I mostly respect their obvious compassion for other aliens when they mention how horrible they feel the Eternal Doctrine is and, after the Kohr-Ah win, beg the Captain to try to escape from the Kohr-Ah.
Least favorite: That's a tough one. It's mostly a choice between the Utwig for being crybabies, the Druuge for being scammer douchebags (I mean, seriously, their ships are useless!), and the Supox for not playing a major part in the game.

Indeed, if it wasn't for their ships, 100 of my crew would still be nice and cozy at the starbase. Too bad about them, really... That over-sized cannon of a spaceship can be very effective if your aim is good. The Mauler is fun if you're a sniper, but do not expect to get far with it if you never use the furnace. Heh, whoops! Out of fuel! Who's next?
The Druuge themselves, on the other hand, are another story. They are not the most unreasonable of thugs and corporate tycoons out there, but I would never want to trade places with a Druuge, nor would I trust any of them, for that matter. I find nearly everything about the Druuge creepy. They look like they're being tortured by their own ships' control mechanisms. They lie, give you "deals" that consist of selling your crew into slavery, and are obsessed with finding live creatures to toss into the furnace at the first opportunity they get. In fact, if I were to judge the Druuge by their personality alone, I would say it would have been better if the Orz wiped them out instead of the Androsynth. I am fairly certain the Orz would find them *frumple* enough to do so if they were to speak with them. If anything, the ensuing hilarity would be worth it. Oh, what I would give to watch as those two races establish contact...

My favourite races are the Supox and the Slylandro, mainly for being the two of the most unique evolutions of intelligent life in the game (IMHO.) Breaking out of the "plastic forehead" mentality is something I really respect. I know, I know, a lot of the races in this game are more than just plastic foreheads - that's one of the things I love so much about the game, 20 years later - but these two stand out to me for whatever reason. I'm also fond of the Spathi for the same reason, though I hate their ships and that prevents me from getting too much use out of them.
I don't particularly hate any races, like others have said, but my least favourites are probably the Druuge and Ilwrath. Never liked spiders, although I must admit they have some good lines.
