It was a quite difficult (if not impossible) to create such a complex battle mechanics which would simulate damage to ship systems back in 1992. And besides that, SC isn't simulation, it's a pure arcade and it will always remain that way. Fun is absoulutely the most important factor in every game (that's why we play them), but at least a little of logic is also quite important if you ask me, even in a hard sci-fi arcades. An "armor" or "health" or something like that instead of "crew" could have been put under the bars which present hitpoints which cause the ship to be destroyed if they are depleted. So in computer language there isn't any evidence that tells us: "crew members are directly killed if the ship takes damage". It's just how we imagine/translate it in our brains and/or how the developers wanted it to look like.

I believe that the "health" of the ship is measured in "crew" units rather than "hull integrity" was to accomodate ORZ/'Quan fighters and the Syreen song.

To return to the topic of the OP, my favorite race was by far the Zoq-Fot-Pik. When Star Control 2 first came out and I ran into the Zoq-Fot-Pik not far from Sol, they were the ones that truly drew me into the game. Most science fiction is plagued by the same, tired hominid like, bi-pedal, bi-lateral symmetry aliens. The Zoq-Fot-Pik were such a wonderful exception.
In that same vein, I like the Suppox, the Ur-quan, Slylandro and especially the Chymr. I thought it was very thoughtful of TFB to posit both a race of machines as well as a race of non-organics as enlightened rather than genocidal maniacs. In science fiction, we tend to villainize alien concepts based on how different they tend to be from us and I thought the Chymr and its constituent races were an intriguing exception.

Oops... I think we got off, the topic a little. Nevermind, the Zoq-Fot-Pik are interesting indeed due their civilization was shared between four sentinent species (I guess the Zebranky were also sentinent nevertheless their diet) which probably evoluted individualy since the diffrence in their apparences are large. Oh, and... Frungy? What the hell is it? It's some kind of sport and no other details are known about it (as far as I know). They behave and talk the similar way the humans do. This makes ZFP too much similar to us and I don't have the feeling I talk to aliens. This is why I like Chmmr more than ZFP.
