Repair your keys.cfg file to continue
« on: December 09, 2010, 09:48:38 pm »

Hi,

I had UQM installed earlier on my table computer and since that computer broke, I bought a laptop. I installed the same version I had on the previous computer (I can`t remember the exact version but it was the one without the key configuration option). Since that version had shift and alt (or was it ctrl) set as controls, they didn`t work on my laptop. I removed that version and installed the version with the key configuration option. The game ran normally and I re-configured the keys using the configuration option. Now the game won`t run anymore, I get the following message:

The Ur-Quan Masters encountered a fatal error.
Part of the log follows:

The Ur-Quan Masters v0.6.2 (compiled Jan 15 2007 13:56:34)
This software comes with absolutely NO WARRANTY;
for details see the included 'COPYING' file.

Netplay protocol version 0.3 Requiring remote UQM version 0.5.4.

Repair your keys.cfg file to continue.

I tried to uninstall and reinstall the game but the same error message appears all over and over again.. and I don`t know how to repair this file, even though I can find it! Please help me.

Just delete the file.  I'm pretty sure I had that problem a long time ago.

Yes, deleting it should work. If you can't find it, the Technical FAQ has your answer:

Where are my settings stored?

On Microsoft Windows systems the settings are stored in a folder named 'uqm' in the application data folder for the current user. This is usually in one of the following locations:

Windows 95/98/98SE without separate users
    "C:\Windows\Application Data\"

Windows 95/98/98SE with separate users
    "C:\Windows\Profiles\YourName\Application Data\"

Windows NT/2000/XP
    "C:\Documents and Settings\YourName\Application Data\"

Windows Vista/7
    "C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Roaming\"

Unix systems (including Darwin/Mac OS X)
    "~/.uqm/"

The "Application Data" folder may be hidden. You can tell Windows to display hidden files and folders in the Folder Options dialog, which you can find in the Tools menu of any folder window. If you can't find the settings directory, use the Windows search functionality to look for a file "keys.cfg".
