Who "invented" them?
« on: March 17, 2011, 07:37:03 pm »

I've never closely observed original SC2 cover until yesterday. And what have I found? The creature on the right. Looks just like Lurg.

Now, I'm wondering where did the idea of the Lurg race originally come from. Is it from the original SC2 itself and is there any pre-P6014 literature about it then? Or was it just a mere portrait of an undefined alien that was used later in Project6014 to visually fulfill the newly "invented" race, the Lurg?

It looks to me like it's supposed to be an Ur-Quan. Judging by its color, I would guess that it's the original brown Ur-Quan from before the split into Kzer-Za and Kohr-Ah.

I don't think so. Both the Kzer-Za and the Kohr-Ah have six eyes (three larger and three smaller) while this creature has only two.
Haven't you played P6014 demo? According to the creature's teeth, tentacles, eyes and shape of head, I'm almost certain it's Lurg.
And that confuses me because the Lurg are not even mentioned in the original SC2.

Box art designers never used to paint anything relevant to the game, it's pretty damn lucky that that spaceship resembles the Vindicator even a little. As far as creature/Lurg goes, I think the P6014 guys figured it was a decent creature, so they may as well make it mean something. Aside from the visual design, the Lurg are 100% original to P6014. I think.

That's about it, yeah.
There's one knowledgeable individual in the SC universe who might give you the piece you've missed.

I made this comment just after they released the demo (I still have the original Box and Map).

I thought it was a great choice. It adds that touch of mystery and link for older Starcontrol 2 fans

100% correct, the visual design of the Lurg is a callback to the SC2 boxart, hence the resemblance. And yeah, the original box artist only had the vaguest conception of what to make, and filled in the blanks based on those vague descriptions, so it's not surprising our "box Lurg" looks nothing like any race from SC2.

Also, "Lurg" was one of the answers on the SC1 copy protection wheel (along with Supiox and one or two other races) Smiley

huh I didn't remember that, cool.

I really hope when you do start casting voices to try out for the Lurg, something about how they talk with less authoritative tones and more arrogant and despised sounding ones really appeals to me Smiley

Does anyone know off hand who the original box art designers was by chance?

Here is an idea. Give the Lurg French accents like the Spathi!  Grin

Naa it would not fit the way the Lurg speak. It needs to have a power and disdain to the voice.  Terms like "Human Flesh Sack"  should have condescending overtones as well as a mark of disgust and disrespect towards the captain. The speech makes me think they should have more hate in the inflections when spoken too.

Here's an idea: The Lurg are secretly like only 2 inches tall but you don't find that out until later

Here's another idea:  The Lurg don't know they're smaller than you either.
