What's with the caster?
« on: February 04, 2003, 12:45:30 am »

Ok real simple. How do I use the Hyperwave caster? That's besides the obvious; go into devices, and click on it. I want to talk to the nice folks on prycon (or whatever) but I try to use the caster and all I get is the nice bodily function noise with no results. Is there something I'm missing? The Umgah are already under control of that nasty little creature, so they aren't much help. I know someone around here knows what to do! Smiley

It's location-specific, so you've got to use it in the right place.

However, using it by itself in Hyperspace calls the Melnorme.  This really doesn't help you much until you destroy the probes though.....

Be careful where you use it.  Sometimes it calls other people too...

Correction: The Umgah Caster can only be used in systems or in planet orbit screens.  It does not call anybody in Hyperspace.  The two main uses for this are calling the Ilwrath in their home system and posing as Dogar and Kazon to make the spiders attack the Thraddash and the other is on the Procyon homeworld of the Chmmr to talk with them.

The Burvixese Caster, on their homeworld above Druuge space in a remote location of the qudrant, calls the Melnorme when used in HyperSpace and provides the same use as the Umgah Hyperwave Caster in systems or on planets.

Uhh - well, I just tried that... and no matter which Caster I used in Hyperspace, the Melnorme came a-running!

Doesn't really matter which one you find first, use, trade or ignore.

A caster is a caster is a caster Wink

Sorry to disagree with you Omni-Sama, but there is no difference between the casters.

I never get the Burvixese caster, and I can use the Umgah caster for both Melnorme, Ilwrath, and Chmrr.

I've heard an unverified rumor that using a 'caster in Ur-Quan or Kohr-Ah space can cause unpleasant consequences...

My version of UQM crashed today when installing the new 0.13 version, so I cant check out the rumor. You mean like simply Kohr-Ah and Kzer-Za ships then or what? i mean, they turn up all the time anyway...

I don't actually know.  I just heard somebody put a post up here about how they were worried they had blown their whole game because they used the 'Caster in Kohr-Ah space, and now they didn't have time to "spin" up into hyperspace and start moving before they got dragged down by the next fleet of Marauders.  It's possible that the 'Caster didn't have anything to do with it.  But it's nice to think that it might...

Go to Kzer-za or Kohr-ah space and try it. You'd best have the full engines for both though.  Grin

I've always managed to snag both, but I was curious about something.

I've been told that obtaining the Burvix caster before the Umgah one causes the Umgah one to disappear. Is this true? If so, at what point is it 'safe' to obtain the Burvix caster? Only after you have actually picked up the Umgah Caster? After you scan the Spathi moon for energy signatures? As soon as the Spathi disappear? After the Spathi agree to join you? As soon as you meet the Safe Ones?

Doesn't seem to cause any trouble for me at all. HOWEVER, I usually trade off the Burvixese Caster for 1600 fuel with the Druuge before the Spathi disappear, and the Umgah Caster is definitely there. I suspect the Umgah one is ALWAYS there, because you CANNOT trade or get rid of it.
