Prolonging the ur-quan invasion and widescreen resolution
« on: April 24, 2011, 03:41:55 pm »

Is there a mod or a way to stop the ur-quan invasion, or atleast to slow it down?

So that a player could enjoy playing casually without worrying about the time limitation.

Excellent, thanks for the quick reply Smiley

It's an amazing game btw, I only wish there were more like this.

EDIT: well, to not open a new topic, I'll ask here and change the topic name... was any support for widescreen monitors made? I've noticed all of the resolutions given are not made for widescreen.

Star Control II never had any widescreen support and UQM does not add any. It would be difficult to adapt many parts of UQM to make sensible use of a wider screen. While, for example, the view of HyperSpace and planets would be reasonably easy to expand, the zooming and wrapping of combat and solar systems rely on both the gameplay area and the view of it being the same shape. You could make the status bar wider, but this is pretty pointless. Conversations could be handled by shrinking the dialogue choices box vertically, which doesn't really help much. Also, please don't discuss two unrelated issues in one thread.

Yeah sorry, didn't want to crowd the board with topics, so made it all in one. They are a bit connected, being both of them would be mods to the game, heh.

I was just thinking maybe it was possible, because for comparison, Freelancer didn't have widescreen support either, but widescreen was made by tampering with the camera angles/size ratios in the .ini files

I can see it being a problem in UQM though.

I think a lot of people here would be happy to have the board crowded with topics for a change. Smiley

Widescreen is easy for 3D games where you can rotate your viewpoint any old way, since you can usually just tweak the camera's field of view and view more of the universe. In 2D, you can run into problems if the screen view is directly connected to the playing area in some view, such as in UQM. Games with largish playfields that scroll in all directions usually do fine, but changing the view may allow the player to see stuff he isn't supposed to (e.g. secret areas).

At least you can run UQM from command line and use arbitrary OpenGL resolutions with the --keepaspectratio option to keep the game displayed normally and not stretched in fullscreen mode.
You can also just add this option to your uqm.cfg file like so:
Code:
keepaspectratio = BOOLEAN:true
