A consensus Requested
« on: June 23, 2011, 09:31:55 am »

Over the many years of Ur-Quan playing (never played the original) i keep being disappointed about the game ending....  I find and buy new space games only to find my self comparing them to Ur-Quan Masters, they always fail.  They don't seem to have that great feeling when playing them, graphics is good but as far as a concept goes, Ur - Quan masters is unbeatable.  In the end i programed my own Ur - Quan masters game with a dynamic world, it worked great and me and my son have played it since 2009.   But i now have a problem, I want a MMO Ur - Quan masters, in order to achieve such a thing i need a community willing to play the "Free" game with me.

This forum still seems to have an amount of activity, so i was hoping to see what people thought about a MMO version of Ur - Quan masters. Un changed apart from the dynamic world.  Basically asking, if i make it, will you play it?

Also, as not a true follower of star fight, i never really got "into" the story, is the story an intricate part of the game for all you "true" followers?

And last, Big thanks for those that made this great game available for me to discover.

The story is what I thought made this game as awesome as it is. Especially the depth of each race history and relations. The fights were really second in my experience.

I personally dislike MMO and that would probably prevent me from trying it. Somewhere around this forum, or in it's brother here - http://www.star-control.com/community/ was a long discussion about SC MMO.

Well i think i mis represented a little bit, I would have the "story" or a story, but the outcome would be based on the evolution of the environment which would evolve based on player actions. like in the game itself, but without the concrete storyline in a singular direction.  I would in vision a Endgame resulting in a server "reset", in a way simply attempting to increase the story by allowing a dynamic instead of liner path.  But thanks for your feedback, and i will search for that topic, thanks.

Hi spikefin,

Alvarin is right, there was a quite elaborate discussion there, and it's really worth reading it. But, even if its conclusion is a bit negative, in any case, don't let that thread deter you from your ideas. If you do put together a MMO Ur-Quan game, I bet most people on these forums will at least give it a try ! At the very least, I'd be interested in seeing how your own dynamic game plays and feels.

You'll find that this community can be quite skeptic when new projects are proposed, but that's because we have high standards for all things UQM related and have seen many good ideas fail by lack of manpower. On the other hand, once you get something started (which seems to be your case already), the feedback is great and can largely help you improve your project and push you to complete it.

(edited for linking to the aformentioned thread)

Not quite an MMO, but I would be very interested in that single-player game you created. Why have we not heard about this marvelous undertaking? Come on, give us a download link, for the greater good!!  Cheesy

I agree, I would love to see your single player game. You should upload it and then give us a download link.
I think that if there was an MMO I would play it, but my interest wouldn't be in the MMO bit, but in the UQM bit. I would prefer a single player game, but would play a multiplayer one.

Why hello there! As the formal representative of the biggest and brightest Star Control fan site on the internet, the Pages of Now and Forever, I would like to add my vote to the "Please share your completed dynamic game with us" pile. I can promise you hosting for your precious program, as well as coverage on our award winning (not really) news service.

And if all of that doesn't convince you, consider that showing off your skills will make people take you much more seriously and could well attract others to your venture!

Is the Original Poster going to keep us waiting much longer? I can't help but suspect this may just have been a troll hoping to capitalize on our wishful thinking regarding new, SC-related developments.

I realize I might come off as overly cynical, but I see no proof of this project's existence, nor of the poster's credibility. Perhaps the OP is willing to divulge more information about this mysterious project? If this is a joke, I am not laughing.

Well he's been kind enough to provide us with a contact e-mail, so maybe it's time to gently nag him directly in his inbox...

I doubt he was a troll.  Possibly an over-excited fan of the game who aspired to make a tribute game in MMO form and then backed down when he realized how much work that would be.  Really, who among us hasn't been there once or twice (or thirty times?)

Also, it's worth pointing out that the OP made his post roughly a month ago, and it doesn't sound like he had a finished product ready to test.  In fact, it didn't sound like he had even properly started yet.  No MMO is going to be taken from idea to playable beta in one month, especially not one being programmed by a single person, no matter how dedicated.

It would be nice to get a status update if the OP is still cranking away at this, but I wouldn't expect anything significant to show for it probably until next year at the earliest.

All forms of video games are complicated, especially MMOs.  I remember reading a forum post a long time ago that involved someone wanting to make a MMO "like Final Fantasy VII with online elements".  Someone replied to the post asking a list of questions that any MMO designer should ask themselves.  I don't remember what it was but the gist of some of the questions were:
- What will the server platforms be?
- What backup products will be used in the event of missing data, databases, etc.?
- How will the project be funded?

If there was a MMO made, I would definitely check it out and play it.  If Star Control were a MMO, I feel like it might have a "perpetual war" element such as in Global Agenda, Shattered Galaxy and Warhammer Online.  What do other people think about this?
