Joystick help (Sidewinder Gamepad)
« on: February 13, 2003, 10:58:43 pm »

I've tried to configure UQM to use my joystick (Sidewinder Gamepad USB) by editing the key file, but I keep running into the same problem.  On the opening screen (or any menu for that matter) when I press the down arrow on the keypad, the selected option (New Game, Melee, Load Game) changes but begins to cycle through all the choices very rapidly, even after I've released the keypad button.  Combat is impossible.  I change the key file back to use the keyboard and everything works fine.  This is probably something simple, but I would appreciate any help.

Thanks!

Anybody had any luck with getting joystick/gamepad support to work?  Am I posting in the wrong section?

TIA for any replies.

Try adjusting the threshold value.  I use 1000, and my Sidewinder gamepad USB works fine.  I'm one of those darned 3do purists who needs a gamepad to feel he has the authentic Star Control experience, so when they added the key config file I jumped for joy.

The .key file is in the "content" directory.  Just open it with Notepad or Wordpad and it has instructions on what to do.  One final note:  I have 2 non-USB Gravis Gamepad Pros, and I actually had to move all my definitions one line down in the file:  each entry in the defintion had to go one line down from it's keyboard equivalent (when you open the file, it will make more sense).  So in other words, the keyboard definition for "Up" is on one line, and the Joystick definition had to go on the next line with the next keyboard definition.  This was the same for both joysticks, and all definitions.

Thanks, I used to play on my 386 with, if my memory serves me right, a Gravis Gamepad hooked up to my good ol' Sound Blaster Pro.  Ah, the good ol' days, I played all the way through SC2 again after I got that card - after having played through it with just the PC speaker the new sound was amazing (especially the sweet MOD tracks).  Later bought a 3DO off eBay plus a brand new copy of SC2, so I ended up getting used to usinga  gamepad with that too.

The original Star Control I think was a keyboard only affair though since I didn't have joystick OR sound card... Sad
That's where I first learned to love melee!

So I CAN play with the keyboard, but if given a choice I prefer the gamepad.

Thanks for your replies.
