DRM...PORT...MOD
« on: October 24, 2012, 05:59:09 pm »

I do not hnow what these terms mean, so i have looked them up on the internet. Im still not sure what these things allow you to do, or not to be able to do in practical terms. I have mobile phone assisted internet. I can not afford land line rental and broadband. My internet connection is patchy where i live. would this .
1] effect my ability to operate a console with a DRM within it.
2] cost me internet usage.

3]Are ports and mods electronic devises you plug into your console or computer which allow extra functions.
4]Are ports and mods computer programmes you download into a console  which allow you to play any game you want on it.

I have schizophrenia and have been out of touch with the real world and tech stuff for a long time so excuse my ignorance.

I'm not gonna lie, this is a weird post, and it kind of looks like you're trolling. Belongs in the off-topic section, too. I'll try to answer your questions anyway.

"DRM" stands for "digital rights management", though I think "Digital Restrictions Management" is a better description of what they do. DRM is basically software which artificially restricts your usage of your computers and technology. For example, a DVD player might try to make it impossible or extremely difficult to copy DVDs; that would be DRM.

Porting is the act of making a program that ran on one platform run on another. A port is the result of porting. For example, if a game is originally on an XBox, and then is made to work on the Playstation later, the playstation version is a port of the XBox version.

"Mod" is short for "modification". It just refers to customizations to games made by players. For example, a mod might change one of the levels or change one of the character's weapons.

I have looked up Trolling. I have not used one of these forums before. Im not sure if im off subject. And i did not say words to provoke an emotional response. anything that anyone ever says could provoke an emotional response. Im just talking normally as far as i can tell. I dont make up rules for myself on how i should talk. I say what i think. I can do nothing less. If you think i should not tell people that i have schizophrenia then why not. people realise i am not stupid if they have some understanding of my condition. I thought general discussion meant i could talk about anything.

The General Discussion forum is for general discussion about The Ur-Quan Masters, so a topic about what some terms mean is off-topic.

Not what I said at all. I'm just being honest. It looks like trolling because it's so random and seems unlikely (I guess mostly because your English has seemed perfect up to this point, it's hard to believe you would have trouble looking up at least DRM on Wikipedia). I didn't mean to offend, sorry.

Mod has a second common definition when discussing hardware as well. Modding a console or handheld (like an XBox or PSP, for example; this is not really a PC thing in this context) will allow it to do things it normally can't, such as installing and running custom software or bypassing DRM. It's sometimes also called "installing a modchip" to refer to the hardware needed. Doing this can open up a console to do all sorts of things it normally wouldn't, but is also fraught with danger; the console makers tend to update their OSes frequently to try to patch out vulnerabilities that allow people to do this, and in the process, this will make any modded console that installs the update useless and unable to run at all. Mod your hardware at your own peril.

Wikipedia has only been a really big deal for 8 years. If our new friend has been out of it for around that long or longer...

I like the sound of a Mod Chip. If i put a Mod Chip in my playstation, and it still worked fine. Then i cant think of any way the gamemakers could make it stop functioning. Its an old ps 2.
