Thraddash.
« on: October 25, 2012, 07:05:54 am »

I am using a [FAQ] walkthrough for PC to get me through star control 2 for the first time. Im at the point in the walkthrough where im on a Rainbow World expedition i just Mined a planet here 283.6  785.7 at epsilon draconis. But everytime i try to leave by entering hyperspace i encounter Thraddash. The walkthrough does not mention this bit. But im playing on 3do cd not PC. Thraddash has so many ships against me.

Do i have no choice at this point of the game but to beat all Thraddash,s ships. ?

If you're stuck in a cloud of ships (can happen with any alien race), you will have to fight them off, gain their friendship, or get lucky and outrun them. Did you try talking to the Thraddash?

(click to show/hide)

If you haven't already, you should maximize your thrusters at least; if you do this, you will be able to outrun any ship.

I kept trying and this time i escaped after only having to defeat 7 of his ships and 1 probe. He killed off all my fleet though. He cant be talked out of fighting it seems . But i have encouraged him to go off and attack the ur-quans enemies to impress his masters. Im always happy to cheat and use spoilers. they make games more fun.

The Thraddash ships are flown badly by the AI. Once you figure out how, it's quite easy to destroy them. I suggest using your flagship. Assuming you have enough turning jets, you should be able to stay in one place while the AI moves in close to attack.

What's your fleet? With most choices of fleet, you should be able to take down 25 of them.
Try picking a ship which doesn't need to move much.

I have restarted the game. I needed to practice with fighting different ships on super melee. I have started again. And i am stuck again. As the [FAQ] walkthrough instructs i have left the arilou homeword and travelled to the Zog-Fot-Pic homeworld. My game is saved, but there is a gang of the new Kohr-ar ships waiting at the hyperspace entrance. They wreck my fleet. I think i must start from an earlier save point again. I have 4 pkunk ships 1 spathi 2 earthlings and my precursor ship. I always had trouble with the spathi ship in star control 1. It turns much faster than my reflexs can cope with. now these new Pkunk ships are insanely out of control. my precursor ships not to clever yet. If only i could get those Kohr-ar ships to back away from the hyperspace entrance a bit i would have time to enter quazi space.

I would suggest you learn how to fly the Spathi ship. Against the AI (and the AI only, it doesn't work as well on human players), Spathi can easily destroy both colors of Ur-Quan, once one gets the technique down. Otherwise the Ur-Quan will be a very serious threat until you find another way to fight them.

That is unfortunate. Since you're using a walkthrough, I'm not going to bother with spoiler tags. If you care, ignore the next line.

Sadly, plot contrivances dictate that you will never have a chance to use the X-Form during the events of SC2. So it's definitely time to learn some alternate strategies for dealing with your enemies.

I recommend against using a walk-through. You'll enjoy the game much more, even if you have to start over a few times.

I am using the a [FAQ] walkthrough i look up on net. I am getting better with the spathi ship. I just killed 4 dreads with 1 spathi , I lost most of my crew and i crashed into the planet twice. I cant control precisely the turning of the spathi but i can repeat a rhythm and pattern from side to side while endlessly releasing seeker missile which is repeatable over and over. I wish i had a Yehat with some dynamo,s turn jets and thrusters added. nothing could touch me then. am i the only person who never uses his thumbs when operating a joy pad. I only use fingers.

Part of the problem is probably that you're playing on the 3DO SC2 is not very easy to play on a gamepad, it takes a ton of practice. Keyboards are a lot easier.

I could not disagree more. Game Pads are infinately superior to a keyboard. Im completely useless on a key board. They need thicker rubber pads under them also, they feel horrible to press and have a tacky irritating sound. I would only play this game on a computer if a game pad can be plugged in to the computer. wow i never new the yehat came from scotland. The vux here are so easy to kill, They dont jump on you, its great.

Well, gamepads are good for some games, but for games like UQM and Asteroids where you rotate and thrust, it's going to be more difficult. Not too bad, but in particular if you are pressing the up direction on the d-pad to thrust, you won't be able to turn as easily (the 3DO controls do allow you to use a button, though, B I think, so maybe it's just not an issue for you).

If the gamepad is why you're playing the 3DO version, though, I should tell you that USB gamepads are abundant, and XBox 360 (corded) and PS3 controllers also work on personal computers (I don't recommend the PS3 controller though, unless you have a LOT of patience). UQM supports gamepads, and you can configure what buttons do what.

If you want to find a good USB gamepad, you can go to a site like Amazon and search something like "usb gamepad" or "usb game controller". The Logitech ones (I have an F310) work well for classic games, and AFAIK the XBox 360 corded controller (or wireless + the usb dongle) is the best for 3D games. Or you could get a USB adapter for pretty much any classic game console controller; I have one for SNES controllers myself and I've thought about getting a N64 controller + adapter since that seems to be the cheapest way to get a 6-button gamepad with shoulder buttons (much cheaper than the Saturn controller).

I can see how game pads may not be so great if you control the D pad or the buttons with your thumbs. I never learnt to do that. It freaks me out when i see players who can use there thumbs. It must cut there response time down so there brains must think more quickly to compensate than i am able to. My thumbs have the same sensitivity and fine motor skills as my big toe. As soon as i get a proper computer i will find someone to load it up with star control 2 and get a game pad to fit it. Thanks for the info. My 3do wont last forever. Can a Mod Chip be put in a modern Console that would enable me to play star control 2 on it in theory. ?
