they feel horrible to press and have a tacky irritating sound.

This depends highly on the individual keyboard.  Wink A good keyboard (such as on IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad laptops, or especially a good mechanical one like the old Model Ms) would probably change your mind.

If you don't use gamepads with your thumbs,  you really probably should be using a keyboard, or something with a similar feel to the keyboard. Maybe you should try a few and see if you like one? All keyboards are not manufactured equal. Some have classic big keys, some have membrane-esque keys, some have regular-but-flatter keys, etc. I think certain Apple computers (which I don't know the names of since I don't use Apple computers) are god-awful because they feel like a membrane, but who knows, if the sound of keyboards is one thing that irritates you (and it's not one of those keyboards that you're thinking of), you might love those keyboards. You just need to try a few out and figure out what you like.

I'm not sure because I've never shopped for a keyboard, but I guess major electronics stores (like Best Buy) probably have some keyboards out on display, I know they do this with mice for example.

Or you could try the Makey Makey or something, I don't know.

In my game, after you've sent them off to fight in the UrQuan Wars and show off thier new "butt blaster" modifications, you only need to destroy about 5 or 6 battle groups.  Then you stop and talk with one who thinks that "Maybe humans can fight after all..."  Then you kill another 5 or 6 battle groups and they become your friends.  At that point in my game my ship isn't armed, I use my outriders to fight for me.  Earth ships kill the Thrads quite nicely if you stay in one spot and just lob missiles at them.

Side note: the comp does not fight with the Thrad ships very well, they really arn't very hard to beat.  However, when I use Thrad ships to fight, I cream the Green UrQuan easily.  If they'd have had the "butt blaster" mod before the UrQuan got to Thraddash space, the UrQuan would be the Thrads battle thralls!

Well, the key confit really matters. I personally hate the default settings. I prefer wasd for movement and whatever else is comfortable for attacking. Probably something with your right hand, like j and k. Then you can just have your hands on home row and it's really easy. I'm not a fan of the arrow keys in the slightest.
