UQM Integrated with Google Sky
« on: January 09, 2013, 09:58:32 pm »

Here's an idea for the high end programmer who wants a visually unlimited and real universe to melee or adventure in.  If you haven't tried it, Google Earth can be used to view the sky instead.  Imagine that as a star background while your gaming.  I've never tried any Google APIs but just throwing out the random thought to possibly plant the seed.

It might be a redo for the game engine or spawn something entirely new.

I get the idea that "real is cool," but I really don't think it makes much sense in this particular context.  Firstly, the number of players who are likely to even notice that the star field is composed of real constellations instead of just randomly placed pixels is probably pretty small.  So it's an awful lot of work for the programmers to almost no effect for the players.  Secondly, for those who DO notice, it would probably just break suspension of disbelief in the game.

After all, in reality, the stars only look like that from the surface of the Earth.  As soon as you leave this planet (let alone this solar system), they won't look like that anymore.  And the surface of the Earth is one of the few place you CAN'T go in this game. =P

Note also that we're not even sure that the Hyperspace galaxy and the Milky Way are the same - for all we know the Hyperspace map is a completely random set of stars from all over the Truespace universe (much as Quasispace portals are seemingly totally random).

Ya I see your point about real not really being fun/cool.  Passing thought, remember of course SC is a 2-d game that never shows a true perspective from your local ship's viewpoint.  But almost certainly possible to do, at least in Windows.  But it might fire a spark in somebody given the basic possibility of it.

Using real places and names kinda intrigued me, and you'll possibly never run out of places to adventure to.

I'll have to chat with you on your ideas of hyperspace oldlaptop...
