Steam Greenlight?
« on: January 18, 2013, 12:06:45 am »

Hey all fellow starcontroll lovers!!!

So I was just wondering if any of you guys might be interested in trying to get Ur-Quan masters on the steam green light project the game could be free and it would get some huge traction in our community.  Not to mention more signatures for the petition let me know what you guys think I helped with the marketing campaign for the PvP based MMO Forge so I could be a large contribution to this if need be.  I'm looking at you devs this could be a big break for you guys.  For this interested leave a comment of pm me thank for reading =DDDDDDDDDDD

Um... I don't think this makes sense. It's not even their game; they've just updated it to work on newer computers. Putting in on Steam via Greenlight just seems wrong to me.

UQM is free software, in both senses of the term.  So....who would pay the $100 account setup fee?

Moreover, I don't see this as being a good fit.  UQM doesn't really feel any need to expend effort to expand its audience, and Steam doesn't have a lot of reason to try to bring in games that they'll never make a dime from.

Though it WOULD be nice to get the game on Steam, if only to increase awareness of this classic.  Especially when/if the HD version is formally incorporated into it as an option.

Does Steam allow noncommercial games? This would probably be necessary for UQM thanks to the license of the game data.

Point 1 generating 100 dollars isn't some crazy feat to perform. Number 2 the game is open source the only way the devs would get in trouble is if we put the game on steam as a pay to play not a free download.  This is a classic title I have been spreadin it around my fps gaming community (that I own) West Coast Zombie Panic and I have been told by around 120 ppl roughly that they love it.  This game just needs to be brought into the light and steam greenlight would be a good way to expo it into a more modern generation of players I mean look at the game Faster than Light.  Total knock off if you really think about and look how huge the game is if UQM was to be put into an HD pack it could explode in a brand new way I hope more people would get behind an idea like this.

I take from this that Steam does indeed allow noncommercial titles, but I need to correct you on an error here. What prevents commercial distribution of UQM is not being "open source". I don't know if the Open Source Definition requires commercial distribution to be allowed (though I think it does), but most open source software is also free software, and the Free Software Definition includes allowing commercial distribution.

What makes commercial distribution not allowed for UQM is that the game data (graphics, music, sounds, dialog, etc) is under CC BY-NC-SA, which does not allow commercial use (which, for the record, means it is not a free license).

As a matter of fact UQM has a specific exception for distribution along with UQM itself:

respective creators.  The content may be used freely under the
terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike
2.5 license (included below, and also available at

may also be copied freely as part of a distribution of The Ur-Quan
    Masters.

So think we should get this ball rolling bye just found out yogscast is doing a walkthrough of uqm but I've never seen that version they are playing on I guess an hd pact either way that is some huge exposure for this game them playing just might be the thing that resurrects this game.

Why don't all races have point defense lasers?

I think popularizing UQM is a good idea.

But before doing such a thing, I would wait until netmelee has all the kinks ironed out. Specifically, there needs to be a central server that lets you join/create matches easily. An excellent addition would be understood rulesets for filtering: 200 pts, nodupes, no capships, 1 retreat.

Automatic tournament creation & management would be even sweeter.

A formula to rank people by skill would be neat, too. When playing "ranked" games, your rank is adjusted based on who wins, and what your rank difference is.

Much of that would be nice.  However such a server costs money.  Are you paying? Tongue

I just found this game recently, from the Yogscast videos you mentioned, and I'm so glad that I did. I think publicity would be great, because this is an absolute gem (almost like a Tzo Crystal (aaaaaaaaaaaah!))

But concerning a Steam Greenlight: even if it is apparently legal to start one from the community, it is highly advisable to get consent from the original creators. I say apparently legal because someone down the line who wrote one word of dialogue in the original release may sue the tits off of everyone involved.

Highly advisable according to whom? The consent is already in writing. All trying to get a second dose of consent from the authors is going to do is waste everyone's time.

I say apparently legal because someone down the line who wrote one word of dialogue in the original release may sue the tits off of everyone involved.

If Toys For Bob didn't actually have the power to release the assets under the terms given, then that's their legal trouble, not ours. If it was necessary to verify that every license given to you is legitimate, then the whole point of licenses would be tossed into the garbage.

Being sure is always smart. Besides, I'm sure Valve would want to contact the original creators regardless, since they could get sued for a lot more than anyone on this forum.
