Worth playing Star Control 3?
« on: February 23, 2003, 07:40:24 am »

Hello everyone!

I (like everyone else reading these forums) am an avid fan of SC2 and would like to more about the story and how it progresses.  I have become interested in reading the latest threads about the deal behind the Orz, Arilou, Androsynth, etc.  A lot of the posts refer to story elements from the *grumpy* SC3 game and I was wondering if it was worth picking up and playing through just to get some more of the story?

Back to whoopin' up on the Kohr-ar...

---------
Still remember being taunted by the box for SC2 before christmas and seeing that really cool grey ship with a ring of fire surrounding it!  Little did I know that I would soon be playing my favorite game of all time!

Your signature/quote thing seems to appear twice. Might want to take care of that.

As for SC3, play it if the box is sitting right in front of you but don't go hunting for it. You aren't missing out on much. The difficulty of that game is almost non-existant and you have to do an awful lot of sitting around waiting for fuel.

I am probably putting my head on the chopping block here, but the game was decent.
NOWHERE NEAR AS GOOD. But decent. Like temple of doom compared to the lost ark. There is a list out there that lists everything that went wrong with the game. Everything on that list I remember I agreed with.  The game could have been better but they decided to do a half ass job. The story which I think came from the original writers is interesting but if you don't follow a walkthrough you will bore yourself to DEATH.

I at least half agree with Bioslayer. It wasn't a horrible game, although it certainly wasn't that much good either. The story points were at least mildly interesting, and some of the voices were quite good, like the VUX. However, the game engine itself is more than a bit flawed, which took most of the fun out of the game.

So do play it if you happen upon it, it'll kill a few hours. Just don't expect it to be anywhere near Sc2. Also, if you ever try to motivate any thought of yours on this forum with Sc3, you will proably be flamed to a crisp, unless you start your own specific thread for it.

If you are a huge fan of SC1 and SC2, then I say go for it.

Its a decent game on its own, not even taking into consideration Star Control.

I agree with above, don't pay more than 5 bucks for it....

Taking into consideration Star Control, its not a worthy sequel to SC2 IMHO but does propose a lot of *interesting* conclusions and what ifs to the things we all wonder about in SC2.

Save. A lot. The event engine is buggy and if you accidentally leave the system at the wrong time, well, you could conceviably make it impossible to win by not sticking around for a triggered event you were supposed to have (ship approaching. Suddenly, you disappear! Oops, game over for you but you don't find out)

I agree.  Definitely play the game--it proposes a great many answers for question in SC2.  It's interesting to see how the designers of this game thought the story MIGHT go.  But do save a lot.

* remember to shut off your speakers first, unless you want to feel the wrath of disguesting MIDI music!

I still can't believe they sunk so low as to put MIDI into a game, and a supposed successor..

The MIDIs were fine on my machine, but that's because I'm a MIDI composer and I had them running through my synthesizer through the external MIDI ports.

Anyone have copies of the MIDI files?  I could convert them to MP3s with all the new sounds and they might not sound too bad.

The Orz, especially.  Best voices ever.

I dont know, I think SC3 had a good idea with the whole fuel/counter thing, and no hands-on-mineral mining. It may be just me, but i thought it was pretty cool, the whole eternal ones idea.

I recently re-played Star Control 3 using a walkthrough.  Mainly I did it because I never beat the game the first time because I was so disappointed by it when it first came out.  I must say, it is fun to see some of the better Alliance members as puppets, and to hear awesome voices (such as the Orz, VUX, etc...).  And you know what, some of the new races were original... I liked the Doog and the Xchaggers most of all, they seemed at least a bit more original than some of the others.  And the crushifying power of the K'Tang is funny to admire.

I'd say the game is worth playing, but I wouldn't buy it if that's possible.  I mean, it's probably not worth it to shell out some cash, but it is cool to see the Orz and listen to all their *frumpy* glory.

I think the Syreen reactions to any accusations you make are reasonable -- after all, from their PoV, they did right. There was no tactful conversation option available for you to use.
(that itself is a problem...)

Though I'm not happy with the syreen representation, since their puppet looked like she had just survived falling off an express train.
