I won the game with something like two weeks of in-game time remaining.
I had a vague notion of a time limit, but couldn't remember exactly when it was supposed to be. Also, I spent a lot of the game hopeless at fighting anything but VUX ships, and learned to fear Ur-Quan in particular, so I never managed to beat a Kohr-Ah in combat and get their sphere of influence up on my map. I didn't even realise they were supposed to HAVE a sphere of influence--I just assumed the green Ur-Quan one covered both factions.
There I was puttering around the galaxy hoovering up minerals, when... pop... the Druuge sphere vanished from my map. No warning, no explanation, nothing.
That's odd, I thought. Better go check it out.
I made it to Mycon space (or was it VUX?) when I was intercepted by what I blithely assumed would be battle thrall ships. To my utter horror, up pops a Kohr-Ah battlegroup instead. "We have won our ritual war... NOW WE CLEANSE..."
Cue total panic.
I spent the endgame frantically chasing the rampaging Kohr-Ah and liberating bits of vital tech from the devastated worlds they left behind. (That was the only way I could figure out to get the gizmo from the Mycon, since that version of the game was missing the Syreen/Organon text.)
I delivered the fixed Ultranomicon to the Utwig just as the Kohr-Ah moved in for the kill--they were overlapping on the map. The dialogue with the Utwig went something like: "It is now time to fulfill our destiny!... Oh. It's too late." *Utwig instantly go extinct*
By the time I put all the pieces of the story together and launched the final desperate assault on the Sa-Matra, most of the galaxy had been massacred. Only Earth and *gulp* the Ilwrath survived to see freedom (along with those lucky Spathi and Syreen under their slave shields, and presumably the Arilou and Orz tucked away in their home dimensions). Bit of a Pyrrhic victory... but hey, I did it.
