Hint2 - every ship, exceot the Precursor shop, has 2 weapons, a primary weapon which is fired when you press "control" and a special weapon whis is used by pressing  "shift."
Not quite true — several ships only have one weapon, since the secondary is not always a weapon; and the Precursor can have two. (Actually, quite a lot of ships have secondary abilities that are not weapons.)

Secondary abilities that can cause damage are outnumbered by those that can't:
Androsynth, Earthling, Kohr-Ah, Orz, Shofixti, Spathi, Syreen, Thraddash, Ur-Quan, Zoq-Fot-Pik (10)
Arilou, Chenjesu, Chmmr, Druuge, Ilwrath, Melnorme, Mrnmrhrm, Mycon, Pkunk, Slylandro, Supox, Umgah, Utwig, VUX, Yehat (15)

I'm not sure I would include Chenjesnu or Vux in that list, since they do hamper your ability to fight.  And Slylandro don't have a secondary ability even though they should have.  What happened to thier defensive missiles, a system that was "hard wired into the probe" something that could not be changed?

The secondary ability collects asteroids to recharge the battery.

What happened to thier defensive missiles, a system that was "hard wired into the probe" something that could not be changed?

The probes were never in combat mode. They were breaking down ships into component parts for replications.

Those and the Melnorme and Chmmr do go out and affect the enemy ship, yes. If we count those as half, then it's 12 and 13. Point is, secondaries as a class are mostly abilities, not just weapons.
