Is it wearing armor?

You know, I think spathi would generally be hermit-crab-like in that they'd conventionally wear armor even in social situations

I was playing with the Spathi design a bit a couple of days ago.

You really have some great work Kwayne. I know, I've lurked on your dA page.

It would be cool to have the entire intro sequence in that detail.

I only tried to make a C64 pixelart one, but never finished.

I've said this before but I love that it has this, "Oh crap!" look on his face like something extremely scary just walked by, like a fluffy bunny.

Your Commodore 64 interpretations of our alien conversation screens are BEAUTIFUL!  Having worked on that sweet, awful beast myself, I can appreciate how each and every pixel has to be in just the right place. Nice job.

That looks like an entirely different sort of creature. Sort of like an… umm… what was it? (looks it up) an Lk. There we go. Not to mean anything bad about it…

Very nice drawing, but I wonder how a species like that was able to develop its mechanical arms. Would be difficult to develop mechanical arms for a species that doesn't seem to have any arms/fingers. Dolphins have bigger brains than humans, but they don't have any arms/fingers, so they haven't been able to develop any technology.

Whales have much bigger brains than humans:

If the lore still holds true, Spathi are very social creatures. Tending to stick to very large crowds from birth.
It may be that a collective of Spathi worked together to use their bodies to make tools, to make tech, to further the protection of their species.

I don't know about the seriousness of brain size. Lets just say that sapient species have a brain trait that is not found in common sentient species.

Thank you! I hope some day I can make an authentic looking C64 mod for UQM.

Maybe they got small arms under the domes on the sides of that saddle.

But seriously, I don't think too deep about how plausible the design of a race should be when I make Star Control themed drawings. Adopting such inhibitions would result in satisfyingly believable races, but would also prevent me to draw a lot of fun stuff. Most races -- I think -- in SC2 feel genuinely alien because either they look or they think in a way that is simply outside the boundaries of what we as humans tend to accept as functional or believable. The Zoq-Fot-Pik, the Melnorme, the Slylandro, the Mycon are all questionable when it comes to their ability to manipulate their environment, yet that doesn't stop them being very essential in defining Star Control's distinct style of presenting alien races.
