What's that big picture at the top? Is that the Lurg on the right?

That's original box art for the SC2.

Which is weird, because they never existed in SC2...

Probably a crappy depiction of the Ur-Quan from a hazy description of what they are.

Maybe an early Dnyarri design.

Um, you do know that the Lurg was based on that picture from the box art, right? So it's not actually weird at all.

Um, you do know that the Lurg was based on that picture from the box art, right? So it's not actually weird at all.

Yep. I just thought it would be a great nod to the old fans. I got the idea around midnight,  and stayed up all night drawing it.

After th first demo release, I talked to TFB, and they said the "Lurg" was just the artist's interpretation of the UrQuan, based on a short description.   This was a typical practice of the time. As you may have noticed some early box art looked nothing like the game. Now with bigger budgets, better artists, and better graphics technology this is almost unheard of today.

I love it when people connect the dots themselves. Two have told me they thought it looked familiar, and when the Lurg say "You can feel it in the back of your mind, can't you?", they freaked out a little. One said, he laughed at the Lurg saying "We have always been here watching you", because the box was right there above him on a shelf. Even the name Lurg is based on the original Star Control copy protection .  The TFB guys seemed to really like it, so I'm happy about it.

The moment when you noticed the similarities,  and started to wonder. When your inner Sherlock Holmes started working overtime, I love to create those moments for people.

I find this whole thing very cool.

This reminds me... I wonder about the art on my box, the one with a sucker-fingered hand and a metallic hand gripping a rupturing earth.
