What does it say in the setup menu? Can you change it there?

There's 2 setup menus. You get to the "Android" menu by tapping the bar at the top of the screen, right after you launch the game while it's loading. From there you can map phone buttons or "virtual" buttons to any keyboard button you want. Once you're in the game, there's a 2nd setup menu, from there you can go to controls. Select the option to adjust the controls, select ESC, then hit the phone or virtual button you want to use.

That should do it.

Kind of a pain to set-up, but worth it if you don't want to play on a bulky laptop. Definitely recommend playing with a Bluetooth controller though, or keyboard. You can use a PS3 or Wii-Mote controller too, as they use Bluetooth. The Wii-Mote requires an app that only works on Android 4.1 or lower older though, unless Google changes their code.
