How do the Kohr-Ah manage?
« on: February 26, 2003, 09:47:13 pm »

The Kohr-Ah commit genocide on a regular basis. But how does one assure complete success in such a large enviroment as space? I mean, sure, if they happen upon races like us at our current stage, with one system and low-tech, piece of cake. But if a galatic civilisation spans six or seven starsystems, shouldn't they be able to flee, and warn the next bunch of ppl of the oncoming threat? Or hide somewhere in truespace. A large and advanced civilization, such as the Utwig, chenjesu, or even Druuge should be able to load a couple of thousand ppl into different ships, and then send them off into different direction. Also, rooting out hidden installations in a system must be real challenging work, hidden bases in asteroidfields and so on. And of course, the Ilwrath should be able to just cloak all their ships, and sit around in some uninhabited system til the Kohr-Ah go away.

Well, if someone really is as eager to commit genocide (or galactic holocaust) as the Kohr-Ah are - there is no way in avoinding them.
Something will always happen (cloaking device fails, unwanted transmission, out of resources, warp engine signatures) - and I bet that not only the Kzer-Za would possess drones to keep an eye on a system or region of space.
If the Slylandro probes are all over the place, imagine what a more sophisticated race like the Kohr-Ah will manage to do and invent if they put all their remaining forces behind it. And those are immense, since when they start their attack, the Doctrine War is over and all the Kzer-Za's resources will be at their disposal as well.
You cannot hide forever, especially not if that sort of "space-Nazi" is on your tail.

Oh, and please, don't anyone lecture anybody else on history here - after all, we're talking SCII-UQM.

GM good point... I never thought about the probes... Those would make a system uninhabitable for, well pretty much eternity I suppose, seeing as they could bring back he Kohr-Ah at any time. maybe the Kohr-ah routinely leave probes behind in every system after they depart a certain region of space. that'd let them know if any intelligent life evolves as well... Still, that is a lot of probes...

Oh, and my apologies, i didn't think of the fact that this is a bit of a tender topic, I don''t mean for it to spawn to RL. Anyway, we are all grown up here, so I'm sure we'll behave. (And as this thread appears to be sinking fast anyway, in a bit it wont matter)

One of the species I cooked up for an alternate ship design was based on the idea that some of them managed to hide in their sun, where the Kohr-Ah didn't think to look.

Cool idea. I suppose they would have missed the Slylandro as well... So the only way to evade them would be to be one of the unlikely ones... Or perhaps do something completely unlikely. Settle comets or some such? the Syreen had colony ships, but those were too big I suppose, seeing as the VUX could find them.

Well, D_999, guess that "hiding in the corona of a sun" is stolen from StarTrek,

and for hiding in places like a gas giant - that is not really an option for us hunams.

But I fear even settling really nasty planets won't bring us any further - best example is Hoth from Star Wars.
The Empire send out thousands of spy drones, guess what the Kohr-Ah could do.

What are the chances of surviving dug in someplace? Slim I fear.
And we can't really start a BattleStar Galactica kind of exodus either - way too slow (Best example are the Syreens).

We can't talk the Kohr-Ah out of it, so either fight'em and lose, or run and lose, or hide, be found and lose.

What was an option to tell the ZFP?
"Hey, space is a tough place where wimps eat flaming plasma death."

Oh - one more thing, LP - what does RL stand for? (Sorry if I'm un-educated here, but all those abb.s)

I didn't say in the corona - that would be way too visible. They would have to be in the photosphere to really be well hidden.
Of course, their ability to DO that and things like that is a rather different way of going about things... sort of a magnetic bottle in reverse (special weapon), not some freakish "metaphasic shielding". And how they connected to each other for communication etc, slightly modified, is their primary weapon.

Anyway - I'm not saying it's a solution for everyone, but these guys managed to survive. When they heard that the Kohr-Ah were coming, they completed the exodus from their planet that had, fortunately, been happening for a long time. They then nuked it to kingdom come to give plausibility to the theory that they had killed themselves off, and dove into their  (and other nearby) suns, using special reverse magnetic bottles and special ultra-reflective surfaces to keep themselves safe and cool until the Kohr-Ah left. This time did not come until after SC2, at which point they are open to be a race in a potential SC3.
BTW, they sheltered some survivors of another species, which for the most part hid from the Kohr-Ah by just acting like rocks. The Kohr-Ah destroyed the bulk of their populace on their homeworld, and thought they had finished the job. About 100,000 remained, scattered throughout a thousand systems, five or so ships to a system. They went into cold sleep, shut down all power systems, and waited. After SC2, they too were able to awaken.

Oh - my bet. Guess that means I don't have a RL since I didn't know  Wink

Nah, just kidding!

And D_999 - I'd like to meet those 2 races. Sound very interesting and clever, those guys.

On the other hand - a lot of races could survive SC2-UQM when you speed up your mission and destroy the Sa-Matra before the Kohr-Ah start their genocidal rampage - uh, I meant "cleansing" the "filth".

Would be too bad if the ZFP, Syreens & Supox would be killed off just because our dear Captain was kinda lazy and way too slow, right?

I doubt that the official sequel's backstory (i.e. the official ending for SC2) will feature the genocide of any races of the new alliance of free stars. Just a hunch.

it'd make for an intersting SC3 though, civilization style without any opponents. Because the Kohr-Ah wiped out everyone but the humans before the captain stopped them...

EDIT: and GM, take a look at my post counter and tell me who has no life

That would be kinda creepy indeed!

The whole galaxy empty but for the hunams! Call me afraid, but I don't like that idea - makes me feel even lonlier than now.

Hey, LP, how are you're plant-friends doing? Get a life  Wink

My "friends" all died in the winter - wait for their siblings on my balcony. And I really think they should re-introduce those names fot the counters. (Oops, wrong thread)

Foundation - that is Isaac Asimov, right?

Have to admit that I thought about reading it a couple of times, but never did. Same with DUNE and LOTR.

But I can really recommend are:
The Forever War by Joe Haldeman,
Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein,
Armor & Vampire$ by John Steakley (Really great!)

Besides those classic SF/F novels I read a lot of WH40K-stuff.

Just checked my private library - I think I've read one of those foundation novels, but it was in German and I was fairly young - not able to grasp the whole picture...
