As full of missteps as Star Control 3 was, one of the things I really liked was how the speech for Orz was handled. The words in *asterisks* were spoken in a different voice that sounded like a monotone computer speech synthesis. I've been thinking about making this for Ur-Quan Masters, and I finally got around to giving it a shot myself. Being the *silly cow* I am, I grabbed the longest audio file and worked through it with Audacity and voice clips from an open source speech synthesis program. Here's the result, and hopefully people will be interested in giving it a listen:
Feel free to give me feedback on this. I would be especially interested if anyone can point me towards a speech synthesis program that might give a better fitting sound.
Hopefully fudging with the speech files like this is allowed.
I like it, although I think the sudden absence of filters makes it quite strange.
Another thought: What we hear cannot be what the aliens actually say and it's quite stretch to say that we even hear their voices. What we hear is output produced by a speech synthesis system (which may try to... uhm.. preserve a bit of the original characteristic of the... voice of what it's translating, if the concept of "voice" even applies (which seems to be the case in most instances)). One could create a voice set based on that.
