SC-like melee game for iOS
« on: October 25, 2014, 08:29:19 am »

I recently released my first game in the App Store called Star Titans.  Star Titans was inspired by my favorite game growing up: Star Control 2!  Star Titans is a top-down 2.5D space melee game with eight unique ships, each with its own distinct weapon and special ability.

Star Titans features one handed controls and tilt to steer.  I did all the programming myself, and the sound effects and music were composed by the guy who did the sound for Machete Kills and Sin City 2.

It works great on iPhone and iPad.  Thanks for checking it out, and please let me know what you think.

2.5D? Sounds more like SC3. :shudder:

I find the IPad too heavy to play "tilt" games....

Star Titans is not like SC3.  Mainly the story isn't as bad because there is no story Wink.  ST is more like SC1 in that regard.

I decided to use a 3D engine to allow for more realistic graphics and cool camera movement.  For example, the camera rotates with the player's ship, and the panning in and out as the ships move closer/further apart is smooth.

Thanks for the feedback, and I encourage you to try the tilt controls.  You get maximum turn at 45 degrees, and most of the time you are tilting less than that.

Okay, I tried it. (Thank You!)

While the tilt steering works (it needs some getting used to), I had some severe problems with it: The first time I started, the prog was " rotated":

, so I missed instructions (black bar at the right side):

up to the point I coukd not see myself:

This started to get annoying, so I restarted the game.
This time, the screen seemed fine, but the steering was rotated to the plane I needed to steer (widescreen for proper steering, hhighscreen for the menus...)

iPad3, iOS 8.1

The arena is very small, and I often jam into the planet and/or get stuck between planet and arena border....

Baby is waking up, might extend review later.

In total: much better than I feared!

Ugh.  It looks like I introduced a rotation issue with the last update.  I will try to figure out what is going on and submit an update ASAP.

I can avoid it if I start "highscreen".
But the small map is an issue for me....

Is there a gravity? I can't "feel" any.

And damn hard... Can't seem to win... (still on first ship vs the second-to-last).
This weekend is last try....

(also, it really needs getting used to tilt to steer. I seem to need to hold the pad flat, makes it hard to get a good view... )

The orientation issue has been corrected.

Yes, there is gravity.  I didn't make it too strong, but the planets and sun pull you towards them when you get close.

You're not the first person to tell me the game is hard.  I may tone down the difficulty on the next update.  Thanks for your feedback Krulle.

The gravity is not a big issue,

I removed the game again, as it's not one I like to play.
It is well done, yes, and I like the ships, although I do miss some story.

My main issue is the size of the arena. I'd like to be able to fly outside the outer planet, without getting stuck between the outer planet and the border.
I can capitalise on that and lure the enemy in that trap every now and then.

I don't like the short weapon range, but the PC's are too good at aiming, so longer range would make it even harder...

And I still don't like the handling and steering. I just can't get a grasp on it.

(btw, I did win finally by luring the second to last ship until he smacked often enough into the planets.
The last one was ridiculously easy to win, as we got in a tight circle flying around each other, and I got to shoot him, while he missed.
I tried again, and damn. That became an exercise in futility. So I did it again by luring him into the planets.
Patience is the key)
