Damn, that server is so slow.

My (honest) impression, and I must stress that this goes for other people who came up the last few weeks remixing SC2 music:
it has a good rhythm, but there's some more work that could be done on it; for example -

  • I'm sure many would agree with me that the synthetic era belongs back there in the early 90's. Some electric guitars, real drums, less weird keyboard or better synth could do very well on a remix.
  • I agree that it should have some resemblance to the original music, but you could and should change the beat a bit (heh), e.g. add a guitar solo, change the drums, the tempo, whatever.
  • sometimes hobbiest composers (Wink) tend to underestimate work on the drums; and it really ruins the music..
  • Stereo is important. Heck, some of us already have a minimum of 4 speakers + subwoofer.. so consider that as well.
  • All hail Riku!  Cheesy

Seriously though, checkout both George's Shofixti and Riku's Ilwrath remixes and compare them to the recent submissions to the forum. Listen, for example, to the drums - they sound REAL. You can hear how well they've been implemented - both in sampling terms, stereo and rhythm. You can hear how both remixes sound contemporary and nothing like the old versions. Good stereo, 'real life' samples, excellent drums, in short - just perfect.

Any.. constructive comments ?

Yes I agree. The remix is one of the first songs I made with midi based sequencer, so it's more of a testing and learning.

I stated some of the points at the remix.overclocked.org forums you said here too.

I wanted to use more or less electronic sounds at the time. However the electric guitar is one thing I would have wanted there, BUT I didn't want to ruin the whole track with crappy sample based guitars. I don't have electric guitar, and if I did, I don't know how to play it. If I can find some good sample based electric guitars and carefully sequence it.. yes of course. The guitar would be more than perfect.

What comes for the drums, I'd use some linndrum to the drums (I'm fan of the 80's). Also possibly some heavily vocoded speech sfx.

At the time I made the remix, I had some cheap headphones (which cords my cat ate two months ago). Now I have better headphones for composing. The mastering has too much bass (for subwoofer) which I can hear now. I've always considered sound quality and stereo to be important. In this remix I've made sure that it can be played on mono as well, so the surround phases are some what good - this in mixing and mastering.

I can see you prefer real sounds in that sense. I'm into experimenting, electronic and not always trying to reproduce the "real-thing". I like Jean-Michel Jarre, Vangelis. I like ambient music - even compose it myself as well.

Yes the drums are a bit monotonic in my remix. Clean beat is missing, the beat drum is in the mixed a bit too low volume. I did try to find drum samples more like the original ones, but couldn't find ones which would have fit to the overall mix. I've learned a lot since I did the remix, so if I'd be making the remix now, it would be different.

About the George's Shofixti and Riku's Ilwrath remixes.. I didn't really like them that much, technically okay - musically and enjoyability for me not so good. Sorry I don't like "hiphop" alike music. The Ilwrath remix was a bit better of those two, the electronic sounds saved the song.  But arguing about music taste has no point.

// Mark Vera

edit: ps. I'm working on Zoq-Fot-Pik remix now, we'll see what comes from it.

I compose my music what feels good and I like, if some other people like, great, if not, then not. I even use regulary my ambient songs for relaxing.

I'm not saying there should be a reproduction of the "real-thing", but just feel that the theme you've chosen (which I completely leave to your disgression and taste) just doesn't fit the hyperspace music.. Hey! I think that remixing Quasi-space would fit you!! Wink

I'm happy though that you agree with most of the points I've made. I'm looking forward to.. hearing from you (literaly Wink).

lol...  while I guess any track could use a little more bass or the pumping of a drum in the background, I must say that this track does a great job at remixing a classic track.  Yes, remixing, not re-creating the track from the ground up.  While I'm not a big fan of either of the 'official' new alien remixes, I am glad to see that other people are getting involved with the process.  This song, to me, is similar to the old track...  but at least it doesn't completely tear down what was so great about the original.  If you've heard my opinion before when the 'official' new tracks were previewd, you'll know why I feel so adamant about this concept.

Yes, well this remix is about 6 months old or so. Didn't even know The Ur-Quan Masters re-release existed, so this remix isn't ment to replace the in-game music. I just wanted to remix it back then.  Roll Eyes

Quasi-Space is quite demanding to remix as well. It is so minimalistic that any additinal must be carefully considered. I don't think drums would fit in ordinary way..

the 3DO version (and taking off the original PC ending) are two things that should be rectified in the upcoming release.

Yea, I know there's no recorded voices for the PC ending, but even so it should be added. It was so funny Tongue

Not that I would mind a text-only version of the ending spliced onto the end credits of UQM...or even a totally different credit sequence altogether.
