UQM Launcher
« on: March 03, 2003, 01:10:56 pm »

Hey,
I got tired of setting up UQM using command line parameters every time I wanted to change a setting, so I wrote a launcher.

I have put it up on my webserver for anyone who wants to use it.
For those of you that are wary of running unknown exe's off the net, I can assure you that my app will do no damage to your windows installation or your UQM installation.

There are 2 versions.
The first version is 32 Kilobytes, and requires certain Visual Basic libraries to be installed for it to run.
Most systems have these, and so this version should run ok.
If you know you have the libraries, download this version.
http://www.theafterm.ath.cx/uqm/UQM%20Launcher.exe

The second version is 1.1 Megabytes, and has all the required libraries built right into the exe file.
If your not sure that you have the libraries, get this one.
http://www.theafterm.ath.cx/uqm/UQM%20Launcher+Libs.exe

The installation is simple, Just drop the exe right into your UQM directory, and run it.

Here is a screenie for your conveniance

Happy gaming

Great idea! That should decrease the amount of newbies asking where to put the command line options! However, this program is more or less useless for us Linux users. Wink

It would be a good idea to incorporate something like this in the official UQM distribution for Windows. Aside from the minor problem of requiring over a megabyte of extra DLLs, this seems to solve a real problem.

If you'd supply the source code, I'm sure people would be a lot less nervous.

Which libraries are these? The basic (pun not intended) VB runtime library (VBRUNxxx.DLL or whatever it's called nowadays)? Anything else?

If anyone is interested in the source they can email or ICQ me.
My ICQ number is in the programs meta-data

If anyone wants to release this as part of a package they can, I dont care what happens to it, as long as my name stays in the meta-data.
I can provide the source for cvs if its wanted, its nothing too complicated.

The program needs the Visual Basic run time library, and the Microsoft common controls library.

For which version of VB? In my experience, all libraries for VB are highly version-specific, so the runtime for VB 5 is useless for VB 6 software and so on.

You need not worry.
If you are unsure of weather you have the libraries, get the 1.1meg version, thats what its there for.

Looks like VB 6.0 to me (MSVBVM60.DLL and MSCOMCTL.OCX). If you have these files, you should be able to use the smaller download.

for all those linux users out there, writing up a shell script should be an easier way of accomplishing the same thing...
not configurable at use-time, but it will take care of the settings you use repeatedly.

Hey - anyone know how uqm responds to contradictory options like "--cscan pc --cscan 3do"?

You want comments:

Ok, it doesn't work

Guess it assumes you have UQM installed in a specific directory and probably on the C: Drive.

Great idea though.

It does work. You just have to place it into the UQM-directory.

Works just fine, very nice idea and easy to use.

Only one question: What's the difference between normal colors and writings and the alternate mode?

Comment: I really like the way the planets now move into the viewscreen. I didn't like the symbols all that much from the start - text menus are much better!

Thank you for the tool - good work!

As stated in my first post, it assumes uqm.exe is in the same directory that it is in.
So just drop it into your UQM directory and it will run fine.

German Nightmare: To answer your question, I honestly dont know what the alternate fonts and colours do.

However the option was there in the manual, so I supported it..

For those of you interested, I have updated the launcher to version 1.03

I only added 2 features,
1, it now gives an error message if it cant find The Ur-Quan Masters, rather than just crashing.
2, it now saves your settings even if you close it.

You can download it from the exact same links supplied at the top.
