Starmap translation
« on: March 12, 2003, 06:04:31 pm »

I tried to translate star and costellation names from SC-2 Starmap into real starmap and was confronted with a problem. Most of names have direct equivalents in atlases such as "Cygnus - Swan" or "Lacaille - <real astronom's name>".
But I can't find translations for some names (I don't think that those names are simply fictitious):
Gorno Huh
Illuminati
Klystron
Lentilis
Lipi
Squidi
Vitalis
Help me, please!  Smiley

I think both illuminati and Vitali are latin, referring to light or enlightened and health, or vitality. Not sure bout that though...

Well, if you're trying to translate the stars from SC2 starmap to real starmap, that's a rather different endeavor than translating the names of the stars into English... Which are you trying to do?

Into real starmap, of course!  Smiley (But in _Russian_ starmap!  Cheesy )
In some cases I didn't find the stars in atlases, so I had to search the nearest equivalence (in Internet, latin/greek dictionaries, etc). Some stars have names of real scientists...

But I can't find mentioned names... Cry

I think FF+PR3 made up some of the constellation names. The hyperspace map is theoretically constellated from the Chenjesu homeworld (i.e Procyon), so the stars all got moved around a bunch. Then FF+PR3 randomly tacked on 'real' constellation names and fake ones.

You wouldn't believe how hard it is to find a list of stars' locations relative to earth. I occasionally look for a list of stars' positions so I can create a viewer, but the best one I have found is an unfortunately totally outdated space exploration game for the mac 128k called Orion.
I'd pay just to have the map...

Hyperspace in Star Control II isn't the same as TrueSpace.  In fact, that's why Alpha Centauri isn't the closest start to Sol, Sirius is...  The map that comes with the PC version tells us that all the stars were mapped by the Chenjesu and then Star Control gave them names equivalent to famous astronomers or constellations.

Gorno - No idea about this.  It's an Italian name, I think, but a google search showed no scientists/astronomers by this name...
Illuminatii - the second 'i' in the latin genitive form hints that this may refer to 'Enlightenment', or the 'illuminati', ye old good secret society. (?!)
Klystron - quoting WordWeb, "Klystron - an electron tube used to generate or amplify electromagnetic radiation in the microwave region by velocity modulation".
Lentilis - From 'lentil', a plant, or maybe simply the word 'lens'.
Lipi - No idea either, sounds like a Latin form, but there's no Latin word of this root (that either I or my dictionary know of, at least). The closest I can think of is 'Lupi' which would mean 'wolf' (the animal, as opposed to the 'Wolf' constellation which refers to the astronomer.  'U' and 'I' are close together on the keyboard, so perhaps it's a mistake that filtered through to the final version? Smiley
Squidi - The "evil squid" is an animal that Toys For Bob seem to like very much (judging by the old version of their website)...nice little hidden reference.
Vitalis - yeah, probably health or vitality, as Lukipela said.

Also, I don't think you will acyually find them all on a starmap. What's to say TFB didn't just make a few up on the basis that the names sound good. Gorno sounds very Shofixti like for some reason... Btw, is there really a star named Procyon?

Most of the single stars that don't belong to a larger constellation are actual stars in our own sky.  Examples include Aldebaran, Formelhaut (a star name that bizarrely re-appears in SC3 as the Utwig's home system), Betelgeuse, Procyon, Sirius, Antares, Hyperion, Canopus, Rigel, and a whole slew of others.  The one I always wondered about was Groombridge, which is probably not a real star in our galaxy, although I'm not certain about this.  Another one is Organon, which doesn't sound like a real star...  *shrugs*

I found [link=http://www.astronexus.com/data/hyg.htm]this[/link]. I'm not sure how complete or reliable it is, though. It does list Groombridge, but not any of the stars in the list or Organon. My guess is that TFB made them up.

Yeah, Groombridge IS a real star.  And yes, TFB did make up quite a few constellation names in SC2.

And I'll have you know, making up constellation names isn't as easy as it sounds.  I still have the list of 500+(!!!) made-up constellation names I've prepared for the Timewarp full-game. Smiley (Not sure if it will be used though...)
