You wouldn't believe how hard it is to find a list of stars' locations relative to earth. I occasionally look for a list of stars' positions so I can create a viewer, but the best one I have found is an unfortunately totally outdated space exploration game for the mac 128k called Orion.
I'd pay just to have the map...

Search for Gliese Near Star Catalog and Yale Bright Star Catalog
with google or whatever.

Wow, 500+ names for constellations?!  Where would you come up with the inspiration for all those names?

Greek and Roman mythology would give you about 400 names... just name the rest after your friends and you're fine (unless you don't have as many friends?)

[Great info, would like more of that!]

I did notice one thing in the original game where I *coff* lost my printed starmap. I couldn't find Rigel, so I looked up some info, and went to Beta Orionis (which == Rigel); turns out there was a little duplication Smiley

Greek mythology, Roman mythology, Norse mythology, Sumerian mythology, etc etc (you get my drift); the occult; names of astronomers, physicists and scientists; historical figures and references; animals; some names of real constellations and stars that weren't used in SC2; and a nice, handy Latin-English-Latin directory.  And then of course there are also names which are obscure references (well, more or less obscure) to sci-fi, music, and so on so forth, and some inside jokes that only other TW team members would probably get... Smiley Of course, I didn't do this ALL own my own... but most of it, yes. Wink

For example, SC2 has the constellation 'Klystron'... think of what a "Klystrophagus" would mean, and you have an idea of some of the silliness involved.

Hell, right now I have no idea when the TW full game will be released, if at all... so I might just post the entire list on a later date, just for the heck of it...

There is an old PC program called PCSPACE, which can be found at http://ftp.sunet.se/ftp/pub/games/PC/old/ under the name pcsp2_2e.zip, which contains a list of 1200 stars.  It allows you to view the stars from any position, but I haven't tried running it myself.

I've found more  Smiley

The http://www.stellar-database.com/ website is searchable and quite detailed.  I found this from http://www.projectrho.com/starmap.html which is a good reference itself.

Vile-Rancour, any ideas on TW? If you're preparing names for them, have you any insights to progress over there?

If you could post that list of stars, it would be great... I'd be interested to see at least some examples of what you came up with.

Also, I don't think you will acyually find them all on a starmap. What's to say TFB didn't just make a few up on the basis that the names sound good. Gorno sounds very Shofixti like for some reason... Btw, is there really a star named Procyon?

If you look at Jupiter, Procyon is the bright yellow star to the lower right. 3/23/03

There's a bright yellow star in the night sky, and if you look at the upper left of it: et voilà - Jupiter  Wink

(Sorry LP, couldn't resist)
