Smaller Episodic Sequils?
« on: May 06, 2003, 10:17:31 pm »

I was just reading on Penny Arcade where Tycho said he met this interesting fellow named Tim Schafer who I don't know if I've ever heard of, but he was non-the-less impressesed as all get out to meet him.
Anyways, Tycho said, "He talked about how it's all well and good to take three years making a game, but that he would like to leverage the artistic and development talents of a full studio to make episodic games no more than perhaps four hours in length at smaller intervals."
Got me thinking. If you know what you're doing SC2 takes only, what 4 hours to beat, but theres about 120 hours worth of content to contend with to get yourself down to that 4 hour run though, and I don't think that was the idea.
What about smaller sequils that when played in sequence make one giant, intensely deep storyline? Do you think SC could do it well.
I think it could.

I can´t remember the exact job title (lead designer?), but Tim Schaefer helped make alot of the LucasArts adventure games in the 90´s. The last one he was involved with was Grim Fandango.

As to the topic itself....I think it´s a great idea! Not just for SC2, but most games in general.

It sounds like a good idea, but what are the logistics of it?  IMHO, very little games put out nowadays are worth 50 bucks.  So why would people pay for even less content?  Maybe something like 10 bucks per 5-10 hours of gameplay?  Is that what this idea is all about?

to my understanding the first and dominant phase of this project is to restore a perfect and satisfying hybrid of the pc and 3DO version.

but then, the code will be available for anyone to create fan-based sequels.  with some careful consideration and teamwork, this idea would work very well.  the engine will be there.  the ships and races will be there.  you could modify the starmap to create new areas to explore.  you could, i imagine, create new races (and please make them better than the star control 3 races).

i would be very interested in helping with the conceptual design of these proposed sequels.  of course, who wouldn't?  but the important thing to remember is that in order to honor the original game, the quality, spirit, and humor of the original must be upheld.  in other words, it should have to be a collaborative process, preferably with the blessings of and input from mr. ford and mr. reiche.

One thing I worried about was the fact that SC2 was esentally a space RPG, and would a RPG hold up if there was much less space to explore? In other words, if a smaller UQM were made, and you only had one constlatation to play in per sequel, would it be as fun.
I just read something about that once the engine was done that it only took 5 months to write all the dialogues. Supposedly, assuming that a solid enough enigne were made, it might be possible to make sequils to the game as expansive, but lacking any improvements in graphics, sounds, or new alien races for that matter.
Perhaps this idea is better suited for FPSs.
