Does anyone else think the SC1 Mmrnmhrm victory ditty is a LOT cooler than the SC2 one?

That depends on which version of SC1 you're talking about (and on the PC, what sound card you're using). SC2 uses the Amiga SC1 victory ditties and sound effects where applicable, so the Mmrnmhrm ditty in SC2 and UQM is the same as in Amiga SC1. Of course, on an Adlib or MT32, the ditties sound completely different even though it's the same tune, really. And a sound card emulating in software an Adlib or MT32 is probably going to sound slightly different to the expected sound, too.

Generally speaking, I prefer the sampled sound in SC2 (and Amiga SC1) to the FM synthesised music on e.g. the Genesis/Mega Drive or PC with Adlib. I've never heard a real MT32, so I can't comment on that.

I always thought they were the same...  I never really noticed a difference, not even as my sound card got upgraded over the years... *shrugs*

It's Archon, but with spaceships.  In other words, really fun.

It's like SC1, but a chess board instead of a star map and mythological creatures instead of spaceships. Check this site for further details. Oh, and look carefully at the credits. You might recognise someone. Smiley

I saw that game once -- watched someone play.
here is the opinion of the player (who played it quite a bit)
The fact that that game had multiple victory conditions was silly since there was no way one of them would ever be fulfilled -- and the stability of the back row center square made the last fight a serious pain.

What was the one way that could never be fulfilled?  I know about:
1) capturing all the power points
2) killing all of the other side's pieces

How are you going to capture all the power points if your opponent can keep a unit in reserve and sit on one? My friend said he never saw a game end except by killing the enemy king/queen sitting on the home power square.

SC1 is a fun game. It's no SC2, but it's pretty fun. I kinda wish TFB would do a UQM like rerelease for SC1, but I believe the code is lost... hmm... what about the Genesis code though...

Why do we need the source.
Genesis / Mega-Drive emulators are readily available on the net.

Of course, you would have to OWN SC1 for genesis first, for legal reasons.

Archon Ultra > Archon. Lots more fun. And winning by power points is not unheard of in Archon Ultra - like you can teleport a monster in early on to a square next to a power point and kill their wizard.

Genesis emulators sure, but if you already own a copy of the PC version, you'd feel a bit daft hunting down the gensesis version just  to run it through an emulator.. I really hope ity could be remade though. In one form or the other.

killing the wizard or sorceress isn't difficult, and it doesn't end the game either, it just prevents the enemy from using nifty spells like teleport and resurrection.
