The Androsynth
« on: March 26, 2003, 12:48:18 am »

First off, this post is not about what happened to the Androsynth and any possible relation they might have with the Orz.  That topic has been discussed to ad nauseum elsewhere, and I never cared too much about it.

Recently, I was using the Guardian in a Super Melee game, and something occured to me.  The Blazer mode was just like something out of a book I had read.  I don't know how many people have read E. E. Smith's "Skylark of Space"(its older than dirt), but in the final battle of the book, our heros are attacked a huge huge enemy fleet.  It is one globe-shaped ship against thousands.  Since the book was written in the 1920's, the only weaponry that the Skylark(that is the name of the ship, incidentally) is a couple of machine guns that fire X-plosive shells.  After awhile, the ammunition runs out and the Skylark resorts to ramming all the enemy ships.

I was just wondering if this is only a co-incidence or if the Guardian is based on the original Skylark.

The "Blazer" form of the Guardian, to me, was always like a speeding comet or asteroid.  I thought the isnpiration came more from a speeding space rock instead of some old sci fi ship, but I dunno...    :-/

Well, don't worry about it too much. Something tells me Star Wars Episode 1 wasn't a big influence on Star Control. Wink

Was Episode 1 a vintage book before it became a movie?

It did become a book afetrwards though. I've never understood that, why you have to make a book based on a movie. They very seldom seem to be worth the effort of reading...

As for the Blazer, I'd have to go with "It's a huge scary comet". I always thought the Guardian form was just a clever draw up to go with the explanation of how it folds in ontot itself, seeing as it look like it's covered wtih thin discs that just need rotating.

Oh good.  That last post was only a clever ploy designed to attact interest.  Maybe one day, when this thread is several hundred reply's long,  I will get one of the designers attentions!!!

What do you mean, I thought we agreed it wasn't a  book?

I had always thought the Blazer form was caused by the vessel 'tapping into an alternate dimension via IDF' and thus traveling at insane speeds while retaining force in True Space.

And I remember thinking when I landed on their planet and found out what happened to them, "Yeah, that's what happens when you screw around with dimensions that were never meant to be tampered with..."

Sounds like the Androsynth suffer from human nature as well.
