Remixes
« on: March 30, 2003, 01:32:56 am »

Hi all!

First of all, I'm really excited to see StarControl 2 ported so it's
playable on modern machine's again. It's my most favourite game ever. Great job guys Smiley

A question: Is there a list somewhere which songs are already remixed, and which ones are not (and which ones are in progress of being remixed)?

I do a lot of music and have a little project studio and would love to do a remix for this project. Heh, I did one ten years ago too Smiley

I don't want to get in anyone's way, so if all work has already been divided then it's too bad for me... are there still songs available for remix?

Your best bet would be e-mailing either Riku or George...  they're members on these boards.  They're also the ones working on the whole remix project.  Other than them, no one knows which songs are done and which aren't...  we can only suspect that other than the Ilwrath, Shofixti and maybe Thraddash (Go VileRancour! ^_~), that any number of songs could be finished or not...

Thanks for your replies!

I searched around and I'm working right now on arranging and remixing the Ur-Quan song. I think I'll produce two versions, one for in-game use (short, repeating, think original song structure) and a longer one for the upcoming Star Control 2 soundtrack CD (right) Wink
It's progressing nicely and I should be able to post something this evening... Smiley

Wow, man!!!  This is terrific!  The great thing about this track is that it stays true to the original, but adds so much more to it!  Wow, I'm so impressed!  This is a really great track, and you've only added to that imperial sound that works so well for those slimy lil' caterpillars.

It makes the Ur-Quan's theme sound that much more epic, something which is very hard to do.  It sounds like an invading army's march.  Wow, I am using this remix for sure when you finish it.  I can't wait!!!   Grin

Yep, good work man.
Sounds great.

I think it needs to be a bit more evil and ominous though,

Its cool that it sounds so much like the original, but remember, this isnt suposed to sound like an invading army.
Its supposed to sound like an invading melevolant alien force.
So it needs to give you a feeling of evilness and awe.

I think when remixing people need to try harder to keep the remix in the "personality" of the race its for, rather than sticking 100% to the original.

Thanks Grin

J: I agree with you that it has to sound a bit more evil and ominous. It's difficult, because I want to stick with original orchestral sounds. But I'll try ofcourse! A real mix will make it sound much more in-your-face too, so that should help.

Riku already contacted me about the remixes... so that should work out Cool

If I find some time this evening I'll work on it again and maybe post an updated version.

Really excited to make some music for a remake of one of my most favourite games ever Smiley

W00T!

I think your remix rocks and personifies the character of the Urquan. Why..it just makes me want to erect a slave shield over family and friends and communicate with them through my trusty talking frog.

Btw, why are we all Zebranky food?

Hehe...    Grin  I think that this song might work well with a dark choir or something singing in the background.  I dunno, maybe a pounding bass sound in the background to make it sound eviller, y'know?

As you may be able to tell, I know nothing about remixes... all I know is that I love yours and that it's one of the coolest I've heard sop far on these boards.  Wicked job... hope you keep up the good work.   Cool

It will be more evil-sounding. When it's properly mixed it will be much more powerful (I hope). I also think that to follow J.'s suggestion to make it sound more Ur-Quan like (less, human army) I will change a bit in the sound, add a synth drone for example in the lower end. It will still sound orchestral, but with a weird feeling... some ambient sounds effects...?
And a choir? Well, it was there in a previous version, but it became too crowdy. In a later part of the song, or a variation of the theme... who knows Wink

Anyway, Riku and I spoke about the remixing. The songs are supposed to be kept secret 'till release, for the surprise effect. So, no more previews until it's done (just be patient) ;-)

Thank's for your suggestions and kind words everyone Smiley

I'm not sure whether to hope it's done soon so I get to hear the real thing instead of a short preview, or hope you take your time and make it even better than the preview.

For a work in progress, this is highly promising. The only thing I can really complain about is that it's a preview and therefore ends abruptly after 43 seconds. Wink

When I first made contact with the Ur-Quan Drone just off Earth, the music was what really made me realise the sheer power of the Ur-Quan Hierarchy. This remix brings that aspect of the Ur-Quan music to a new level. Truly majestic.

In reference to my post
here (click), I have to say - good job. Good points from everyone though, it sounds a bit Warcraft 2 like (have you got the Warcraft 2 tracks? it really reminds me of those).
So as others pointed out - less Human, more dark and eeeeevil Wink my suggestion though, make it different than the original - i.e. don't go over the same sequence of notes only changing tempo or samples.. add your own touch.
