SC3 release, UQM-style might happen, according to Frogboy
« on: July 12, 2018, 03:15:13 pm »

Hey guys, I've been lurking here well over a decade, I used to have an account years ago but long since forgot its details. I've decided to finally sign up again and maybe quit lurking and actually post once in a while.

Check this out: https://twitter.com/draginol/status/1017146417192816641

If you can't access the link or are weird about Twitter, basically I asked him (Brad Wardell, the CEO of Stardock) if Stardock holds the code/assets for SC3. He said yes. So then I asked if there's any plans for a UQM-style release of the code/assets. He said yes as well.

Pretty cool, eh? What sort of projects would people like to see if such a release occurred? UQM remake using SC3 assets? Something else entirely?

Ports of the SC3 ships in UQM. Most of those were not great, but at least the Claircontlar Pinnacle seemed like it could be pretty fun for PvP.

Oh yeah, that was the first thing I annoyed him with when I joined the Founders program back in September 2017.

At that time the SC3 code was still on a CD hidden somewhere in a pile of boxes. But basically he said the same.
That when he can get the code in order he'll release it to the UQM community.

But for now all work is aimed at SCO being completed and Kessari will have to wait til some time after that.

Welcome (back?) to the forum!

Well, the alien art assets for SC3 were pretty awful, IMHO, and even with the ships I prefer the more animated art style of UQM.  I suppose it might be interesting to re-implement some of the ships in UQM, and looking at the code behind them could help inform that implementation.

I think the bottom line is that Serosis is the only person I'm aware of who has expressed real interest in SC3, so it really depends on what he has the time, skill, and interest to do.

Me and a few others actually.

There are plans for when it's stable to basically tear into it and try to make it into a functioning game worth people's time.

It's either going to be a branch of the MegaMod or it's going to be called The Kessari Quadrant Mod (KQM).

Ooo, turn SC3 into a war game against the Crux. Have them actively invade your systems and stuff like that. Make that fight at the end of the game against the Heralds actually difficult.

Well it's going to be like:

Make the colonization actually mean something

Fix the timed events so a no-win scenario can't happen without the players input

Possibly change the alien art around if the talent is available

Make "Hyper Melee" top-down by default and add in missing ships from UQM
(Possibly move the UI to the right side like the previous games)

Basically turning the game into what it needs to be to be considered a decent Star Control game.

I thought there were a few decently interesting ships there. The Vyro-Ingo could be a lot better with two tweaks - make the main shield attack bigger, and whenever you make a puddle, it creates another puddle a moderate distance away, but the puddles do no damage to ships, only to shots. As it was, though, quite bad.

Harika-Yorn was all right. A bit odd.

As Yazman said this is something we are looking into doing. I do not have an ETA for you guys but Serosis has been talking with Brad on and off for awhile about us getting this released to the community.

If someone is already making an SC3 then I wouldn't need to do all that work myself. Is there a more direct channel I could communicate with you through about this?
