should the forum take down the "News: Paul Reiche and Fred Ford want to continue the story they started when they created Star Control II — The Ur-Quan Masters. «Happy days and jubilation!» «But wait!» «There is something wrong here... something which makes my sheath retract and my talons ooze.» «Please, Captain, we need your help!»" at the top of the page now that everything is squared away?

I would but it seems to be beyond my admin level.

From reddit:
Frungy Games's "quiet period" - how long is it?

As most of us have been waiting for news on Fred & Paul's sequel to UQM, I am disappointed with the parties not disclosing how much longer we have to wait, given that effectively they have had to remain silent during litigation, which lasted for nearly two years.

We know that the parties are free to discuss any of the settlement terms, so that's one detail I think many would love to know. I get the feeling that the period is somewhat unreasonable (this isn't something that is easy to define), but I do hope I'm wrong.

I wish we didn't have to guess, because we know where speculation in our wonderful community can go.

-- PAGING PARTIES TO DIVULGE FURTHER INFORMATION --

...

INCOMING MESSAGE...

BRAD WARDELL:

There's a 2-year period before they can promote a UQM game. But even if they could, it'll be several years before they'll have time (according to Paul).
According to Starcontrol (Stardock's site) post about the settlement, Stardock and Paul Reiche will start on the next Stardock StarControl this Autumn (Fall for those beyond the big pond).

So, no known date.
And since F&P have to think about a storyline first, and flesh that out a bit, it'll be a bit before the whole thing really start getting implemented.
And since Stardock offered "help on technology", they might want to learn a bit about the Stardock Engine used for Origins, to decide whether to use it or not.

And I think they still have to come up with an idea of how big they want the game to be. Focused on story, less on details of images and perfection of visuals, thus "just enough to be a continuation of UQM, purely for the fans of UQM", or whether they want to pop out a full-fledged modern game with all fuss, bells, flashlights and whatnot.

That 2 year silent period doesn't sound alarming to me. I think it's quite a short time to develop a game from scratch though I hope they already got started with something. And I don't think that was imposed on them by Brad but suggested willingly by Paul. Over beer. In that very picture. At least it satisfies Brad's trademark concerns with GotP and timed perfectly well until the new game's release or at least an announcement.

In any case, I'm expecting UQM2 to be released in 2021. Smiley

The foto was taken AFTER the agreement was signed and in broad outlines published.

And I vaguely remember that Fred and Paul have a timeframe a tad longer than 2021 for UQM-*Afterwards*.

Anyway, we'll see.

I don't think that's realistic.  If, as Brad says, they are now back at Activision, they probably will not be able to start work on it until after they have been able to arrange another leave of absence.  And then it will take several years to put a team together and produce a game.

Yes, this outcome is definitely for the best. The current state of things leaves me with a very uncomfortable question: Would I buy the next Star Control game that Stardock has in the pipe? I genuinely have no idea. As an old fan who's painfully aware of the details of the lawsuit, I feel like my answer should be "no". As a profoundly selfish person and as a gamer who just wants his entertainment, my answer should be "yes". Knowing that Brad Wardell tried to trick the core team into handing over rights to UQM, that should be a hard "no" again. Also knowing that every person I've ever met is screwed up in some fashion and being a big believer in forgiveness, there's more reason for "yes". The lawsuit's resolution seems perfectly tailored to make this choice difficult, at least for me. A question for later.
That's also a good description of my thought process. I like space games, I'm also a big believer in forgiveness, and I don't particularly enjoy holding grudges. On the other hand, Wardell's bad behaviour both in regards to this lawsuit debacle and the UQM project (not to mention other incidents outside the scope of Star Control or this community) has been pretty longstanding and he's not really shown any contrition or even really acknowledgement that he did anything wrong that I've seen. And even though I think the notion of forgiving people even when they don't apologize is a noble one, I also don't like actively supporting people who act arrogantly, petulantly or unfairly when they show no regret for their actions (because it sets a bad standard).

So I think it's still going to be a no from me, but who knows. If nothing else, I'd consider at least buying a new game on Humble Bundle and sending the cash charity-wards.
I'm of a similar mind. Forgiveness is for people who are remorseful. I do sort of want to play SCO but I don't want to buy it, so Humble Bundle would probably be the only legal way I would be willing to obtain it.

On Reddit, Serosis has linked to a screenshot of a Discord chat with Brad regarding the use of "Arilou" in SCO, as well as other names from SC2 after the settlement (because, as some of you might know, the Observers in SCO have been renamed back to Arilou in patch 1.4). Here it is. I think it's quite an interesting read. I think it does clear some things up, and it's rather interesting to see that Brad now says that common law trademark claims to alien names are "iffy".

Indeed.  For the last year and a half, he's tended to ridicule anyone who dared suggest such a thing.

Quote from: Draginol
Yea, so Melnorme and ZFP are words we agreed we wouldn't use within future SC games.
And frumple
not just frumple
So, ZoqFotPik is off-limits for Stardock.

Just checked, everything is still exactly the same as before.

This list is for future, new games.
Current SC:O remains untouched, if I remember correctly. (So these cameo appearances have apparently been considered in the agreement as being okay.)

Sorry to spoil your fun a tiny bit, but I finally found the exact quote I was looking for.

Paul and Fred will be changing the name "Ghosts of the Precursors" to something a little less generic
-- (come on, you know we can do better!).  The precise ‘when’ is unclear, but it is still several years off
.
(emphasis by me)

Several years could mean 2 years. 2021 looks nice, 2025 looks depressing. I just hope we're all still alive when the game releases.

The sentence refers to the name change, the announcement of a new name.
Well.... The game itself will only come after that.
