Hello I don't know if this is a bug or not as I can't remember from the early days of playing SC2 on the Amiga. Anyway I've installed UQM and playing around in the sol system and lost my lander on Venus. I went back to the starbase and dropped of the minerals I had collected and restocked on crew, then I went back to Venus but I keep getting a beep when I try to launch the lander. I guess I have to get a new one built somewhere, but where?

More to the point, why in the hell are you wasting your time on Venus? The weather is too dangerous and the mineral wealth too poor to even CONSIDER touching down there..
And so starts my rant about mining. Everyone who says that "mining sucks" as a rationale for an RU cheat is missing the point: It does suck, but if you do it PROPERLY you don't have to do it much at all.
Mining does suck -- it burns fuel to do it, which at 20 RU per unit, ain't cheap; and on dangerous planets (before upgrades, anyways), it burns landers, which at 500 RU a pop, REALLY ain't cheap. Even after the upgrades, it always burns crew, which ironically IS cheap, but I'll leave that up to the philosophy majors to tackle.
Given this, mining planets should be an exercise in "minimizing risks while maximizing rewards", so that you can save your cash for upgrading your ship, and save your fuel for getting you to interesting places. So, if a planet is too dangerous, and you don't have the proper upgrades to make you immune to the dangers, move on. If the planet costs too much fuel to land on and only has low-RU minerals on it, move on.
Conversely, if a planet is safe and requires basically no fuel to land on, do it, if only just to have something in your cargo bay when you get back to Sol. The idea is to think of everything in terms of profitability. If it costs 2 fuel units to land on a planet and three planetfalls to scoop up all the minerals, you'll effectively burn 120 RUs just mining the planet, (more if you lose crew, WAY more if you lose a lander) and if what you collected was Commons (1 RU a piece) and you don't have the lander cargo upgrade, it means the entire mining expedition was a wash, and probably a loss, since it takes fuel to get there. Given that situation, you are better off skipping the planet, it simply costs too much to mine it.
Scanning planets is always free, so it's a good idea to survey the whole system and cherry-pick the best/safest planets of their loot. If that's too time-consuming, just use the rule "blue or better, or move along", meaning you only consider planetfall if you see nobles or better, or something suitably interesting (lots of bio-signs, for example) and you think you can get the goods without too much cost.
The mining part of the game is the "Thinking Man's Game", don't sell it short..

Yep getting the funds is the first half of the game...
And the key too is to do things that'll bring you a lot of RU with very little risk...I've gotten it so I don't have to mine after I get my thrusters, some full fuel tanks, and some RU in reserve to pay for fuel...after that, I don't even carry cargo bays...

Ah yes, the multifarious world of probe hunting. I missed those guys when I shut 'em off, they were really good RUs :). But anyways, mining's not so bad, just take some hints from the starbase commander. One other thing, though, is that if you're having troubles mining, you CAN just save right before trying to land. That way you can reload and either move on, or try again. This is sorta lame, but you can snatch some valuable stuff out of a very hostile planetscape doing that. You should be saving frequently in an alpha, anyways...

Hayes does provide you with a couple of replacement landers free of charge, though, so that might be taken into consideration. Plus, you effectively have unlimited fuel until you take down that Ilwrath, since all you have to do is go back to Hayes when you have less than 2 units of fuel, and he'll fill you right back up each time.
If you don't consider saving and reloading to be cheating, you can clean out all of Sol without any casualities (though it takes a bloody month to do so ). Expect to take three hours in reloading your saved game on Venus, though.
If you retrieve your lander before it's completely full (and thus avoid wasted mineral deposits on an almost-full lander) each time you mine, and clear out all of Sol, and you manage to avoid any casualties (except for Fwiffo's attack) in the process, you'll be able to completely outfit your ship with thrusters and turning jets without having to leave the system.
Or having to sell Fwiffo's ship (along with poor Fwiffo who undoubtedly gets trash compacted along with his ship).
"I'm afraid Fwiffo is no longer with the living." Somehow, Captain, we are not surprised.
