Topic: Can you beat the Sa-Matra in alpha? (Read 8537 times)

After about 20 strafing hit and run attacks with Pkunk Fury the last 2 pods of Sa-Matra were still intact. Am I just terribly unlucky or is the alpha Sa-Matra truely invincible?
I think it might be the unfinished collision check, but I'm just checking if anyone was able to beat it.

heh. I was posting the same thing at the same time you did. As I said in my thread I've only gotten in down to 1 power unit a few times, but it seems that the top left and bottom right ones are the hardest to take out. And with the fast melee I always die (i've never had problems like this on the pc version).

You can take out the invincible shield generators with shofixti, actually (its tough getting enough of them into that battle, though, combat seems a lot faster/tougher than the pc at the moment). The shield will disappear but then I couldn't get the precursor vessel through. It seemed to be blocked as if the shield was still there.

Indeed. And what happens when you turn auto-combat on before taking on the Ur-Quan ships surrounding Sa-matra?

The "cyborg" lets you win the game, but since the UQM doesn't have the aliens commenting on the credits, what's the point?

Wha! No aliens talking over the credits? No ship data in super melee either? Other than being Windows native this version really doesn't add too much to the franchise yet, does it? Hopefully it will, tho. I'm really holding out for the final release when FF & PR3 says "It is good." (PS. tracking shot bug is really annoying!)

its a freakin' alpha, for frungy's sake! the fact that we have this much to play with at all is amazing.
Remember, these folks are doing all the conversions by themselves for free. If you don't like something, either code the patch yourself, or wait patiently like the rest of us.

The point is most of us spent hours trying to beat it. Anyway, I think I found out how, but to do it, but I have to start over. See, sometimes I can get it down to 1 unit, but that's only because of my yehat/pkunk ships. At the end I'm always down to 3 Utwig juggers and I have problems getting them to destroy the power units because they don't recharge their power when those little green things hit them. So, I end up losing a lot of crew points while trying to get them to launch me at a faster speed than that of the fireballs and by the time I manage to get close enough for my shots to hit, I bounce into the fire balls (I can't use my shield and weapon at the same time so I die). Thus, I decided to restart the game and keep those 4 pkunk ships, instead of selling them. So, we'll see if it works (like i said in my post, i've been able to destroy all power units, but at different times).

:-/ i tried for 15 minutes to enter the station with the big ship and no luck. destroying the generators is not so tough once you get the hang of the faster melee. i used 3 shofixti ships to blow out the left generators and finished the rest old-style with pkunk an utwig. even if it's fixed already in the cvs i can't get it because of a stupid firewall... impatiently waiting for 0.2

If you haven't tried it yet, the Yehat ship is very good in the last battle. Whenever the fireballs start to overtake you, you have to run for the green things, throw up your shields, and get your speed kicked up again. As long as your moving fast and using your shields right the ship is practically invincible and you can strafe the shield generators to your heart's content (try various angles before giving up on any particular one).
That said the top left and bottom right most shield generators always seem to require shofixti action for me. Its a good thing the Utwig is so good versus the Ur-Quan in the battle before, it lets you basically choose your other ships for the Sa-Matra itself. Someone asked what the point is, the point is that its a fun fight without the cyborg. ;p Once the speed gets fixed, etc it will be back to easy again...although actually being able to finish via battle properly will be nice, hehehe.

D'oh, should have regged so I could edit. Just in case you don't know, any ships you lose in the battle before the Sa-Matra are replaced by Pkunk and Yehat provided you handled those races right (maybe you can get to the end without saving them?).
