Untitled UQM Sequel's new name discussion
« on: June 13, 2019, 01:23:43 am »

Just for a bit of fun I think it would be a great idea to see if we could come up with some new titles for what once was Ghosts of the Precursors.

A couple of ideas I've been spit-balling over on the Alliance Discord have been...

The Path of Now and Forever - Good jumping off point, related to the previous game and those who have played it will get the reference
Remnants of the Doctrinal War - A bit more literal when it comes to what's happening in the next chapter
Free the Spathi - A bit of a joke title, but I'm predicting that it will be an actual plot to crack their slave shield at some point.
Famous Battles of the Ur-Quan Conflict Volume VI - Another joke title because, why not?

I also had a small idea for "Free the Spathi" that it would take nearly the entire game to crack their slave shield because they would have improved upon the technology to the point where even the Chmmr would have a hard time.
Then, as a caveat, Volasaurus suggested that the Spathi themselves would also be trying to crack it from the inside, due to the fact that a couple of Evil Ones survived the mass capture in the previous game and only came out of hiding because the sky turned red.
Or perhaps the Umgah were kind enough to preserve an Evil One and set a couple genetically engineered ones free on the surface of Spathiwa right before the slave shield went up.

"The Coreward Trail" was a title I thought of back during the lawsuit. Like "Ghosts of the Precursors", it points to solving the mystery of the Precursors' disappearance. Granted, it sounds very much like the beginning of SC3, but the similarities could very well end there.

*Up*, *Down*, and all *Around*: Purple

Because we got some promises from the Infernal Duo.
And based on those ideas/promises, we can maybe deduce some storyline, and therefore possible names.
From a mail by Fred Ford to a Star Control II player:

: Were ALL the Androsynth destroyed when the Orz came?

Perceptive lad. This was a leading plot candidate for our theoretical sequel.
<_Stilgar> <ORZ> Q:What was your ideas for the hypothetical Sequal? <Fwiffo> We never had to settle on an idea, because we never got that close. But we were thinking about those missing Androsynth.
<TheManta> Fwiffo: Why *did* the Melnorme's bridge turn purple?  :) <Fwiffo> The Purple Bridge question, eh? How much is it worth to you? <Deep-Reep> 120,000 credits <Fwiffo> I promise here and now, that in our next SC project, we'll answer that Purple Bridge question to your ultimate satisfaction.

And in the end, The Ur-Quan Masters 2 will do.

Also: is there an Ultronomicon page already, where these quotes regarding plotlines for F&P-made sequels have been collected?

[edit]
<_Stilgar> Fwiffo- were any ideas in the ending of SC2 going to carry over to your version of SC3? (MARK II, etc.?) <Fwiffo> In a word: Yes.

[...]

<_Stilgar> Fwiffo- what WAS the Mark II? <Fwiffo> The Mark II was a precursor cruiser as opposed to a precursor tug which is what you guys flew.
Gotta stop here.

I see two really fertile paths.

UR QUAN (CONTINUATION)
  • Ur Quan Odyssey
  • Ur Quan Aftermath
  • Ur Quan Exodus
  • Ur Quan Insurgents
  • Ur Quan Origins (LOL)

STAR (CONTINUATION)
  • Star Odyssey
  • Star Liberator
  • Star Succession
  • Star Continuum
  • Star Revolution

My last good idea is to call it "The New Alliance of Free Stars".

In all cases, it's easy for fans of UQM/SC2 to connect the title to the original series. But obviously, you have to consider how the titles are received by newcomers.

I think the copyright owner of Star Control will not be happy with anything "Star ...".
Well, "Galaxy Control" would be out of question for the same reason.

"Talana's Voyage" would be nice, ....

Or "Vela II", as that may be where the New Alliance of Free Stars brings a lot of ressources, and nudges the Factory to make the next ship in the programming line....

Ooooh. It slipped my mind about the Orz/Androsynth connect.

So now I have to spit-ball more titles.

They Came From Below
Mysteries of Elysium - "Elysium" being a possible name for the Androsynth's adopted home planet
A Sign From Below
Things Are About to Get *Heavy*
*Heavy* Space

Note that beyond the necessary legal reason, the artistic reason for not going with the title "Ghosts of the Precursors" was that it was "too generic", rather than a change of story direction.  So the old working title is still a clue as to at least part of what the game will be about.

Perhaps another vague clue comes from the fact both preceding games in the series took place during and heavily involved warfare between two powerful factions of allied species.  So we might assume the new game will be likewise.

A third clue is that the state of the universe implied by the closing events of The Ur-Quan Masters.  The Ur-Quan are defeated, quite possibly to the point they are no longer the major threat.

So... if the genre of the game requires a powerful opponent with numerous allies/subjugates, but this is likely no longer the Ur-Quan, could the former working title be a hint?  We have long assumed it would be the Orz and species they have absorbed replacing the Ur-Quan and their battle thralls.  But what if it is actually the threat of amok sentient-tool-relics left behind by the Precursors, such as (probably) the Mycon.

It may be that this threat was somewhat known to the Ur-Quan and partially suppressed by them.  If memory serves, the Kzer-Za did warn the player of threats too terrible for humanity to imagine, or something to that effect.  Were they referring to just their Kohr-Ah brothers, the Orz whose presence as player escorts goes unnoticed by them (unlike the genetically restored Dynarri onboard the Vindicator)  or something else we had not yet witnessed in our small corner of the galaxy?

The Ur-Quan Masters: What They Left Behind

I really like the subtitle.  And even though the Ur-Quan are presumably defeated, the title might work as well in two ways.  Ostensibly, it refers to a threat left intact and now unresisted after the collapse of the Ur-Quan Hierarchy.  But playing the game, we discover the "They" actually refers to the Precursors.  Mycon, Mmrnmhrm, perhaps another classic race and several previously unseen ones from farther out in space, have for the longest time now, slowly been working to complete a gargantuan project encoded into their deepest instincts and genetic memories by their Precursor makers. Now, over 25 years after the fall of the Hierarchy, their project is entering its final phase, and it will require the consumption of countless planets, stars and altogether much of our galaxy.  Stopping what has been set in motion means embracing an enemy you cannot forgive (the Ur-Quan) and a threat you cannot afford to forget (the Orz).

Ultimately, your interaction with the Orz, which is fully necessary to suceed, completes their manifestation in our reality.  A cliffhanger ending to set up the next (possibly final) sequel.

ghost of the precursors has some very ominous theme connection with the orz, androsynth and dimensional fatigue drive...i was most intrigued by the title and a little disappointed it needed to be changed. uqm2 is my runner up either fully spelled out or abbreviated.
